Here’s my English translation of Serena’s recent article Gelo e Fuoco<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Quando da bambina vidi il film ‘Dottor Zivago’, la scena che mi fece pi\u00f9 impressione \u00e8 quella in cui Zivago e Lara passano la notte in una casa isolata, in mezzo alla bufera di neve, coi lupi che ululano fuori. Quella notte non riuscii a dormire e rimasi sveglia, con la coperta tirata sugli occhi, tutta tesa, in ascolto del vento e dei lupi.<\/strong><\/span>
\nWhen, as a child, I saw the film Doctor Zhivago, the scene that impressed me the most was that in which Zhivago and Lara spend the night in an isolated house in the middle of a snowstorm with the wolves howling outside. That night I couldn’t get to sleep, and stayed awake, tense, with the blanket pulled over my eyes,\u00a0 listening for the wind and the wolves.<\/p>\n

Non che fosse molto probabile che io venissi attaccata da un branco di lupi in mezzo ad una bufera di neve, perch\u00e9 a quei tempi abitavo a Bengasi, in nord Africa! Oggi per\u00f2, col vento siberiano Burian che infuria fuori di casa, mi \u00e8 tornata in mente quella scena, e mi sembra di sentire davvero i lupi che ululano!<\/span><\/strong>
\nNot that it was very probable that I’d be attacked by a pack of wolves in the middle of a snowstorm, because at the time I lived in Benghazi, in North Africa! Ieri pomeriggio c’era un bel cielo azzurro e cos\u00ec abbiamo deciso di fare una passeggiata! Ma appena usciti dai punti riparati siamo stati investiti da questo vento gelido che si infiltrava dappertutto, malgrado ci fossimo ben coperti. E col freddo si infilavano dei piccolissimi cristalli di ghiaccio portati dal vento, che facevano parecchio male.<\/span><\/strong>
\nYesterday afternoon there was a beautiful blue sky, and so we decide to go for a walk! But as soon as we left the sheltered areas we were hit by this gelid wind that filtered in everywhere, despite us being well wrapped up. And with the cold, tiny ice crystals carried by the wind found their way in, and they really hurt.<\/p>\n

Il vento, come l’acqua, non lo puoi fermare in nessun modo, entra dappertutto, trova microscopiche aperture per passare, sia che si tratti del gelido Burian siberiano, sia che si tratti del rovente Ghibli sahariano.<\/span><\/strong>
\nJust like water, there’s no way to stop the wind, it gets in everywhere, finding microscopic openings to pass through, whether it’s the freezing Siberian Burian or the red hot Ghibli of the Sahara.<\/p>\n

Io sono cresciuta col Ghibli, che invece del freddo porta un gran caldo, e invece dei fiocchi gelati porta la terra finissima del deserto. Questa polvere entrava dappertutto, anche se tenevamo le finestre e le porte chiuse, le pentole coperte e i bicchieri rovesciati. \nI grew up with the Ghibli that brings not the cold but sweltering heat, and rather than frozen snow flakes carries very fine soil from the desert. This dust got in everywhere, even if we kept the windows and doors closed, the saucepans covered and the glasses turned upside down. We had to rinse the plates and glasses before using them, but we always felt the crunching of soil between our teeth.<\/p>\n

\nGoing to the seaside was too dangerous because it created a strong current that carried you quickly out to sea, and being on the beach was torture because the wind blew large grains of sand which hit you like shards of glass.<\/p>\n

\nWhen the Ghibli died down, the floor of our house was covered with a thick layer of dust which you could only get rid of by throwing buckets of water on it and then sweeping it outside. The sheets and the beds were full of sand, as were our clothes, our skin, and our hair. Everything had to be washed.<\/p>\n
