In my last gardening blog La mia battaglia col giardino<\/font><\/a> I had intended to give you a bit more gardening vocabulary \u2026 but full of enthusiasm, after what seemed like an interminable prigionia invernale<\/strong> (winter captivity), I got a bit carried away, and ran out of space!<\/p>\n

Dunque, in compensation, this is going to be a very practical blog. Let\u2019s have a look at il linguaggio del giardinaggio<\/strong> (the language of gardening):<\/p>\n

Il giardino<\/strong> = the garden, il giardinaggio<\/strong> = gardening, and il giardiniere<\/strong>, plural i giardinieri<\/strong>, = the gardener\/s (masculine or feminine).<\/p>\n

Here are some of the main tasks that il giardiniere<\/strong> carries out:<\/p>\n

vangare<\/strong> = to dig, from la vanga<\/strong> = the  spade: bisogna vangare l\u2019orto<\/strong> (the vegetable garden needs digging)<\/p>\n

zappare<\/strong> = to hoe, from la zappa<\/strong> = the hoe: si usa la zappa per fare i solchi<\/strong> (the hoe is used to make furrows)<\/p>\n

rastrellare<\/strong> = to rake, from il rastrello<\/strong> = the rake: in autunno le foglie vanno rastrellate<\/strong> (the leaves have to be raked in the autumn)<\/p>\n

potare<\/strong> = to prune, potatura<\/strong> = pruning: per la potatura bisogna avere le forbici da pota<\/strong> (for pruning you need to have pruning scissors<\/em> \u2013 secateurs)<\/p>\n

concimare<\/strong> = to fertilize, from concime<\/strong> = fertilizer: \u00e8 meglio concimare il giardino in primavera o in autunno<\/strong> (it\u2019s best to fertilize the garden in the spring or the autumn)<\/p>\n

piantare<\/strong> = to plant, n.b.<\/strong><\/em> people often use the colloquial expression \u2018mettere gi\u00f9\u2019<\/strong> = \u2018to put down\u2019, instead of piantare<\/strong>: hai gi\u00e0 messo gi\u00f9 le patate?<\/strong> or hai gi\u00e0 piantato le patate?<\/strong> (have you already planted the potatoes?)<\/p>\n

trapiantare<\/strong> = to transplant: ho trapiantato i cespugli di rosmarino e di salvia<\/strong> (I transplanted the rosemary and sage bushes)<\/p>\n

rinvasare<\/strong>  = to re-pot, from il<\/strong> vaso<\/strong> = the vase or flower pot: potresti rinvasare quella pianta grassa per favore?<\/strong> (could you re-pot that succulent plant please?)<\/p>\n

seminare<\/strong> = to sow, from i semi<\/strong> = the seeds: oggi ho preparato il posto dove voglio seminare le carote<\/strong> (today I prepared the place where I want to sow the carrots)<\/p>\n

tagliare l\u2019erba<\/strong> = to cut the grass, or mow: se si ha il prato inglese, bisogna avere un tagliaerba<\/strong> (if you have a lawn you need a lawnmower), noi invece usiamo il decespugliatore per tenere pulito l\u2019orto<\/strong> (we, however, use a strimmer or brushcutter to keep our vegetable garden clean)<\/p>\n

annaffiare<\/strong> = to water: per annaffiare il giardino si pu\u00f2 usare la canna o l\u2019annaffiatoio<\/strong> (to water the garden you can use a hose or a watering can), noi preferiamo usare l\u2019acqua piovana perch\u00e9 d\u00e0 risultati migliori<\/strong> (we prefer to use rain water because it gives better results).<\/p>\n
