Well I can hardly take a selfie can I!

Asphalt, gravel, sand, mud and loose rocks. In a nutshell, that was my day. Clomping, crunching and occasionally slithering my way from Zanego to Montemarcello and back again. Well, I certainly had my work cut out for me because when humans walk in groups they tend to babble on interminably about life and the universe, or gaze at the landscape, or think about how far it is to the next bar and a nice cappuccino, when they really should be concentrating on where they’re putting their damned feet!

Asfalto, ghiaia, sabbia, fango e sassi sconnessi.

But that’s what I’m here for. And whilst the humans are enjoying spectacular views of pretty little Ligurian towns artistically posed against fairytale snowy mountain peaks, or dramatic pine and cacti clad cliffs plummeting down to the blue-green Mediterranean sea, I’m busy dealing with the challenging variety of delicious surfaces beneath my sole. I love it!

Come mi piace!

Speaking of humans, today there are four: my Geoff, his wife Serena (owner of 38L, who’s not with us today because she’s obviously far too delicate … and fine, and beautiful, with those charming little freckles and flyaway laces and …. stop it!!!), and their American friends Andrea and Carolyn, with their respective footwear: a rather nifty pair of ‘sneakers’ as the Yanks are want to call them (how can you trust a shoe that’s always sneaking around?), and a practical pair of hiking boots.

From Zanego (accent on the Z) the path gradually climbs along an old cobbled communal road. This is easy work for me, and I have time to listen to the voices, inaudible to humans, of the many soles who have passed here before me over the centuries. Often the cobbles have disappeared as these days the ancient byways are no longer maintained, having been superseded by modern roads. But more of that later.

At a certain point, the footpath takes an unexpected turn straight up the steep hillside. And here lies my first real challenge. After days of wet weather the ochre soil has turned to a slippery clay, and I have to use the full power of my incised diagonal grips in order to keep Geoff from slithering back down again. In between slippery bits, I have time to note that the humans have ceased their incessant chatter in order to take big gasps of oxygen. Peace at last!

Going down is even more fun due to the gravelly nature of the steeply descending trail which vomits us out onto my least favourite surface: asphalt! Yuk, just the very word makes my laces shudder! Boring, harsh barren, it stinks of petrol and rubber, and I can’t wait to get my sole back onto something natural again. But the little hilltop town of Montemarcello is just up ahead, and it’s not long before I feel the cool worn paving slabs of the narrow old streets soothing my Vibram.

Up next: Montemarcello and the dramatic walk back to Zanego.
