After a while I begin chatting with our foreign footwear companions who tell me about the challenges they face in and around the Seattle area. Probably too much asphalt for the liking of a country boot like me, but the mountain hiking and kayaking sound pretty cool!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-16057" class="size-full wp-image-16057" alt="" width="600" height="800" / src="https://blogs.transparent.com/italian/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2018/04/100_7990.jpg" srcset="https://blogs.transparent.com/italian/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2018/04/100_7990.jpg 600w, https://blogs.transparent.com/italian/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2018/04/100_7990-263x350.jpg 263w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" />
The colours of Montemarcello. Photo by Serena.

And now for the best bit: the rocky path back to Zanego … this will test my sole to its limits! But wait … first the humans want to take a detour to an old fort atop the cliffs. Unfortunately for me, this involves a couple of kilometres of that nasty asphalt. But I guess it’s a good way to limber up after my lunch break, and it’ll probably help Geoff to wake up a bit as I can tell from his pace that he’s missing his customary postprandial nap.

Back from the fort and the trail takes a steep dive down from Montemarcello, through abandoned olive groves, and towards the verdigris sea below. The ground is littered with small pebbles, really no big deal for an able boot such as myself. But then we make a 90 degree turn to the north-west … and the fun begins! We follow the contours of a rocky coastline roughly 200 metres above sea level.

Disaster almost strikes when I’m put down on a cunning loose rock which slides away beneath me. Geoff is chatting again of course. Humans, huh! Lefty wakes up just in time to help me out, and together we manage to break Geoff’s fall. No lasting damage done, but I realise that from now on it’s up to me to check out every stone and pebble as I can tell that they’re in a playful mood today, and hoping to play a few sneaky tricks on our people. Perhaps this is where Andrea’s American sneakers come in useful?

The landscape begins to resemble an oversized Japanese ornamental garden. Below, a jutting rock is crowned by a tenacious pine. I know all of this because I hear the humans discussing it. As you can imagine, my view of the world is mostly quite limited, although I do get a glimpse or two when Geoff rests me upon a boulder so that Serena can take a photo.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-16056" class="size-full wp-image-16056" alt="" width="800" height="600" / src="https://blogs.transparent.com/italian/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2018/04/100_8009.jpg" srcset="https://blogs.transparent.com/italian/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2018/04/100_8009.jpg 800w, https://blogs.transparent.com/italian/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2018/04/100_8009-350x263.jpg 350w, https://blogs.transparent.com/italian/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2018/04/100_8009-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" />
Me looking out to sea with Il Golfo di La Spezia in the background.
