Pronomi personali indiretti<\/strong> are really not as complicated as they sound once you’ve understood the basics of how they work.<\/span><\/p>\n

To Whom?
\n<\/span> Put simply, indirect personal pronouns answer the question ‘to whom?’ (a chi?<\/strong>)
\nFor example: a chi hai dato il libro?<\/strong> = to whom did you give the book? ho dato il libro a lui<\/em><\/span><\/strong> = I gave the book to him<\/em>. Hence a lui <\/em><\/strong><\/span>is the indirect personal pronoun in this sentence.<\/p>\n

Here are some more examples:
\na me <\/strong><\/span>= to me: Paolo ha dato il libro a me<\/span><\/strong> = Paolo gave the book to me<\/em>
\na te <\/strong><\/span>= to you: volevo dare questa foto a te<\/span><\/strong> = I wanted to give this photo to you<\/em>
\na<\/strong> lui<\/strong><\/span> = to him: puoi passare il sale a lui<\/span>?<\/strong> = can you pass the salt to him<\/em>?
\na lei<\/strong><\/span> = to her: Olivia ha telefonato a lei<\/span><\/strong> = Olivia phoned (to*) her<\/em>
\na noi<\/strong> <\/span>= to us: lo hanno spiegato a noi<\/span> <\/strong>= they explained it to us<\/em>
\na voi <\/strong><\/span>= to you (plural): quando sar\u00e0 pronto mandiamo una mail a voi<\/span><\/strong> = when it’s ready we’ll send an e-mail to you<\/em> (plural)
\na loro<\/strong><\/span> = to them: abbiamo dato un passaggio a loro<\/span><\/strong> = we gave (to*) them<\/em> a lift
\n*Important Note:<\/em> In Italian we often use a<\/em><\/strong> (to) where it wouldn’t be used in English, e.g. telefonare a<\/em> qualcuno<\/strong> = phone someone, dire a<\/em> qualcuno<\/strong> = tell someone, dare un passaggio a<\/em> qualcuno<\/strong> = give someone a lift.<\/p>\n

The above forms are known as forme toniche<\/strong> and are generally used to emphasise the receiver of the action. So the statement Paolo ha dato il libro a me<\/em><\/span><\/strong> = emphasises the fact that Paolo gave the book to me<\/em> and not to someone else.<\/p>\n

Let’s finish off with some examples of how we use the forme atone<\/strong> of the indirect object pronouns:

\nti <\/strong><\/span>= to you: volevo darti<\/span> questa foto<\/strong> = I wanted to give you this photo
\ngli<\/strong> <\/span>= to him: gli<\/span> puoi passare il sale?<\/strong> = can you pass him the salt?
\nle<\/strong> <\/span>= to her: Olivia le<\/span> ha telefonato<\/strong> = Olivia phoned her
\nci<\/strong> <\/span>= to us: ce<\/span> l’hanno spiegato <\/strong>= they explained it to us

As you can see from the above examples, the forme atone<\/strong> are slightly more complicated due to the way that they combine themselves with verbs (darti<\/span><\/strong>), or modify themselves in order to flow better (ce<\/span> l’hanno spiegato <\/strong>and not<\/span>\u00a0ci<\/span> l’hanno spiegato<\/strong>, which sounds wrong and is awkward to pronounce).
