In my last blog<\/span><\/strong><\/a> we explored the basic functionality of pronomi personali indiretti<\/strong>. Today we’re going to see how the forme atone<\/strong> combine themselves with other pronouns or verbs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s begin by revising the forme atone<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

mi<\/span> = <\/b>to me
\nti<\/span> = <\/b>to you (singular<\/em>)
\ngli<\/span> = <\/b>to him
\nle<\/span> = <\/b>to her
\nci<\/span> = <\/b>to us
\nvi<\/span> = <\/b>to you (plural<\/em>)
\ngli<\/span> = <\/b>to them<\/p>\n

Now here are some examples which show how the indirect personal pronoun is modified by other pronouns or verbs. The rules to bear in mind as you read through the examples are:<\/p>\n

1.<\/span><\/strong> When the indirect personal pronoun is followed by a direct object pronoun, i.e. lo<\/strong>, la<\/strong>, li<\/strong> or le<\/strong>, it changes in the following way:
\nmi<\/strong> becomes me<\/strong>
\nti<\/strong> becomes te<\/strong>
\ngli<\/strong> becomes glie<\/strong>
\nle<\/strong> becomes glie<\/strong>
\nci<\/strong> becomes ce<\/strong>
\nvi<\/strong> becomes ve<\/strong>
\ngli<\/strong> becomes glie<\/strong><\/p>\n

2.<\/span><\/strong> When the indirect personal pronoun follows an imperative or an infinitive, it attaches itself to the end of the verb, e.g. dammi le chiavi<\/strong> (give me the keys, imperative<\/em>), puoi darmi le chiavi?<\/strong> (can you give me the keys?, infinitive<\/em>), facci vedere<\/strong> (show us, imperative<\/em>), puoi farci vedere?<\/strong> (can you show us?, infinitive<\/em>)<\/p>\n

3.<\/span><\/strong> This is a combination of rules 1. and 2. i.e an imperative or infinitive followed by an indirect personal pronoun, followed by a direct object pronoun, e.g. dammele<\/strong> (give me them), puoi farcelo vedere?<\/strong> (can you show us it?).<\/p>\n

Finally, dear readers, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to memorise these rules and formulate sentences ‘on the fly’. These are things that will come with time and practice.
