L’ispettore Augusto \u00e8 all’obitorio a colloquio col medico legale, il Dottor Della Salma, che ha appena concluso l’autopsia sui resti del corpo sezionato. I due sono amici da molto tempo e non si risparmiano le frecciate<\/span>.
\n<\/strong>Inspector Augusto is at the morgue having a consultation with the medical examiner, Doctor Della Salma, who has just completed his autopsy on the remains of the chopped up body. The two have been friends for a long time and frequently taunt each other.<\/p>\n

Dottor Della Salma, tutto allegro: “Allora, Carissimo, qual buon vento ti porta?<\/span> Tutto bene a casa? E’ da tanto che non vedo la tua gentile signora.”<\/strong>
\nDoctor Della Salma, cheerfully: “Well, my Dear friend, what fair wind brings you here? Everything okay at home? I haven’t seen your lovely wife for a long time.”<\/p>\n

Ispettore Augusto, brusco come al solito: “Sono di fretta, Della Salma, per cui non perdiamo tempo in convenevoli e passiamo al sodo<\/span>. Che cosa hai da dirmi?”<\/strong>
\nInspector Augusto, brusque as usual: “I’m in a hurry, Della Salma, so let’s not waste time with pleasantries and get straight to the point. What do you have to tell me?”<\/p>\n

Dottor Della Salma, sospirando: “Pensi sempre al lavoro tu, mai un attimo per due chiacchiere fra amici. Allora, scommetto che sei qui per avere notizie sui resti ritrovati l’altro giorno.”<\/strong>
\nDoctor Della Salma, with a sigh: “You’re always thinking about work, never a moment for a little chitchat amongst friends. So, I bet you’re here for news of the remains that were found the other day.”<\/p>\n

Ispettore Augusto, cominciando a perdere la pazienza: “Smettila di tenermi sulle spine<\/span> e dimmi cos’hai scoperto.”<\/strong>
\nInspector Augusto, starting to loose patience: “Stop keeping me on tenterhooks, and tell me what you found out.”<\/p>\n

Dottor Della Salma, accennando un sorriso malizioso: “Come vuoi … il corpo non \u00e8 un corpo!”<\/strong>
\nDoctor Della Salma, with the beginnings of a mischievous smile: “As you want … the body is not a body!”<\/p>\n

Ispettore Augusto, ormai spazientito: “Come sarebbe a dire<\/span> ‘non \u00e8 un corpo’ … adesso non sarei pi\u00f9 in grado di riconoscere un corpo umano?”<\/strong>
\nInspector Augusto, now impatient: “What do you mean ‘it’s not a body’ … so you think I’m not able to recognize a human body anymore?”<\/p>\n

Dottor Della Salma, con aria trionfante: “Non ho detto che NON E’ un corpo umano, ho detto che non \u00e8 UN corpo!”<\/strong>
\nDoctor Della Salma, with a triumphant expression: “I didn’t say that it’s NOT a human body, I said that it isn’t A body!”<\/p>\n

Ispettore Augusto, sempre pi\u00f9 nervoso: “Parla come mangi<\/span>, che qui non ci si capisce niente!”<\/strong>
\nInspector Augusto, increasingly nervous: “Keep it simple, none of this makes sense!”<\/p>\n

Dottor Della Salma: “Voglio semplicemente dire che i vari pezzi non appartengono ad un’unica persona, ma a varie persone.”<\/strong>
\nDoctor Della Salma: “I simply mean to say that the various parts don’t belong to a single person, but to several people.”<\/p>\n

Ispettore Augusto: “Non mi prendere per i fondelli<\/span>!” dice alzando la voce.<\/strong>
\nInspector Augusto: “Don’t make fun of me!” raising his voice.<\/p>\n

Dottor Della Salma: “Non ti sto prendendo per i fondelli, ora ti faccio vedere. Ecco, vedi qui la testa? Il taglio sul collo non corrisponde al taglio sul tronco, perch\u00e9 la testa \u00e8 stata recisa sotto la quarta vertebra, mentre il tronco \u00e8 stato reciso sopra alla quarta vertebra.”<\/strong>
\nDoctor Della Salma: “I’m not making fun of you, as I’ll now show you. Right, see the head here? The cut on the neck doesn’t correspond to the cut on the torso because the head has been severed below the fourth vertebra, whilst the torso has been severed above the fourth vertebra.”<\/p>\n

Ispettore Augusto: “Quindi, o questa donna aveva la quarta vertebra doppia, o sono due donne diverse.”<\/strong>
\nInspector Augusto: “So, either this woman had a double fourth vertebra, or it’s two different women.”<\/p>\n

Dottor Della Salma: “Ecco, vedi che ci sei arrivato anche tu<\/span>.”<\/strong>
\nDo<\/span>c<\/span>tor Della Salma: <\/span>“There, you’ve arrived at the same conclusion as well.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Ispettore Augusto: “E di quante persone si tratterebbe?”<\/strong>
\nInspector Augusto: “And how many people are we talking about?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Dottor Della Salma: “Almeno due, forse di pi\u00f9, ma per esserne sicuri dobbiamo aspettare i risultati del DNA.”<\/strong>
\nDoctor Della Salma: “At least two, maybe more, but to be sure we’ll have to wait for the DNA results.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Ispettore Augusto, avviandosi a gran passi verso la porta: “Fammi avere i risultati al pi\u00f9 presto, priorit\u00e0 assoluta!”<\/strong>
\nInspector Augusto, striding towards the door: “Let me have the results as soon as possible, top priority!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Dottor Della Salma, sorridendo soddisfatto: “Porgi i miei saluti alla tua gentile signora.”<\/strong>
\nDoctor Della Salma, with a satisfied smile: “Give my regards to your dear wife.”<\/span><\/p>\n

A few interesting colloquialisms and idioms:<\/span><\/p>\n

le frecciate<\/span> <\/strong>= literally: arrow shots, colloquially used to mean some sarcastic remarks, similar to the English ‘barbed remarks’.
\nqual buon vento ti porta?<\/span><\/strong> = expression used to greet someone we haven’t seen for a long time, or who has arrived unexpectedly, as if brought by a favourable wind.
\n<\/strong>passiamo al sodo<\/strong><\/span> = literally: let’s move to the solid bit, the important bit.
\ntenere qualcuno sulle spine<\/span><\/strong> = literally: to keep someone on the thorns. To keep someone waiting in an uncomfortable state.
\ncome sarebbe a dire …? <\/span><\/strong>= common expression used in resentful replies to ask for clarification.
\nparla come mangi<\/span> <\/strong>= literally: speak the way you eat, meaning that we should speak in a simple, direct way, without convoluted expressions.
\nprendere per i fondelli <\/span><\/strong>= euphemism for the more common ‘prendere per il culo<\/strong>‘. Fondelli<\/strong> are patches used to reinforce the seat of the trousers, so it literally means ‘to grab someone by the bottom of his\/her trousers’, hence, ‘to make fun of someone’.
\nci sei arrivato anche tu<\/span> = <\/strong>Literally: you’ve arrived there as well. Colloquial expression meaning that someone has arrived at the same conclusion
