With its characteristic pyramidal shape of pink-greyish granite, from the sea the island seems like an impregnable fortress. Its steep coastlines are practically inaccessible, with the exception of Cala Maestra, in the west. There, in Cala Maestra, you can find the only building that still stands, the Royal Villa.

Montecristo is a natural paradise, with rare flora and fauna, which are now protected. The island is in fact uninhabited, and only daily landings are allowed for up to a total of a thousand people a year. The authorized visitors are mostly scientists: biologists and geologists. However, the sailors who find themselves navigating past Cala Maestra at night swear that they see lights inside the uninhabited villa.

From this the legend grew that Lord Taylor, who had a wife and children in England, had fallen in love with a beautiful local girl, whom he kept confined on the island. One day Lord Taylor departed for his annual visit to his family in England and never returned again. According to unconfirmed rumours, Lord Taylor was poisoned by his wife and legitimate children who were worried that they would loose their inheritance. His young mistress waited for him for years, spending hours on the top of a rock scanning the sea, whilst at night she wandered mournfully around the house. Even now when it’s dark her ghost is said to walk around the house with a lantern in her hand looking for her beloved Lord.

In reality, the Royal Villa was secretly bought a few years ago by a rich widow, the Countess Mafalda Castragalli de Capponi. Mafalda Castragalli and Cavalier Brambilla, a multimillionaire businessman from Milan, had married not for love but business: the elderly Cavalier Brambilla had, in fact, a lot of money and ambition, but no title nor connections in Milanese high society. The young and beautiful Countess, on the other hand, had an important aristocratic title, but no dowry, because her inheritance had been squandered by her father at the gambling table.

After nearly twenty years of marriage, the old Cavalier lost his life in a tragic fire, in which the still young and attractive Countess was left severely disfigured.

As promised, here’s the English translation for chapter 5 of The Strange Case of the Irregular Body.
