Here’s my English translation of part nine of ‘The Strange Case Of The Irregular Body’.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sono le <\/span>4<\/span>.25<\/span> di una notte buia e tranquilla <\/span>quando <\/span>un<\/span> peschereccio arriva <\/span>nelle acque al largo d<\/span>ell’isola di Montecristo. <\/span>A bordo insieme al capitano ci sono l’Ispettore Augusto e il Tenente Ciceri travestiti da pescatori: giacca e cappello di cerata, stivaloni di gomma. Augusto e Ciceri stanno in piedi a prua a scrutare l’orizzonte, che si alza e si abbassa davanti a loro. All’improvviso in lontananza appaiono dei piccoli punti luminosi.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong>It’s 4.25 a.m. on a dark, calm night when a fishing boat arrives in the waters off the coast of the island of Montecristo. On board with the captain are Inspector Augusto and Lieutenant Ciceri dressed as fishermen: waxed jackets and hats, and rubber boots. Augusto and Ciceri are standing on the prow scrutinizing the horizon, which rises and falls before them. Suddenly, far off, small bright dots appear.<\/em><\/p>\n

Tenente Ciceri: “Ispettore, guardi, ecco l’isola! Si vedono delle luci!”
\nLieutenant Ciceri: “Inspector, look, there’s the island! You can see the lights!”<\/em><\/p>\n

Man mano che il peschereccio si avvicina, i punti luminosi si fanno sempre pi\u00f9 grandi e chiari. Sembrano provenire dalla Villa Reale.
\nAs the fishing boat gradually gets closer the bright dots grow larger and clearer. They seem to come from the Villa Reale.<\/em><\/p>\n

Il capitano segnala la sua presenza lampeggiando tre volte. Dopo qualche istante dal molo rispondono con lo stesso segnale. L’Ispettore Augusto tira un sospiro di sollievo … tutto sta andando per il meglio.
\nThe captain communicates his presence by flashing a lamp three times. After a few moments the same signal is sent back from the pier. Inspector Augusto breathes a sigh of relief … everything’s going well.<\/em><\/p>\n

La barca si avvicina lentamente al molo guidata dalla luce segnaletica e attracca. Un uomo vestito con felpa e cappuccio, il viso non visibile, \u00e8 sul molo con una torcia in mano. Con voce minacciosa si rivolge bruscamente al capitano dell’imbarcazione: “Alla buonora!”
\nThe boat, guided by the signalling light, slowly moves up to the pier and moors. A man wearing a hooded fleece jacket, his face not visible, is on the pier with a torch in his hand. With a menacing voice he brusquely addresses the captain: “About time!”<\/em><\/p>\n

Il Capitano risponde con tono apologetico: “Mi dispiace, abbiamo avuto un’avaria al motore.”
\nThe captain replies apologetically: “I’m sorry, we had a problem with the motor.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Uomo sul molo: “Siete stati seguiti?”
\nMan on the pier: “Were you followed?”<\/em><\/p>\n

“No, no, nessuno ci ha seguito!”, si affretta a rispondere il Capitano.
\n“No, no, no one followed us!”, the captain quickly replies.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Scaricate i sacchi e metteteli su quel furgone l\u00e0”, ordina l’uomo incappucciato ad Augusto e Ciceri indicando un furgone frigorifero parcheggiato l\u00ec vicino.
\n“Unload the bags and put them in that van there”, the hooded man orders Augusto and Ciceri, indicating a refrigerated van parked nearby.<\/em><\/p>\n

L’Ispettore Augusto e il Tenente Ciceri si scambiano un’occhiata e poi si mettono al lavoro. Scendono nelle celle frigorifere e tirano fuori dei sacchi di plastica neri, non pi\u00f9 quelli originali, essendo stati sostituiti alla Capitaneria di Porto di Livorno con altri sacchi contenenti delle vecchie coperte.
\nInspector Augusto and Lieutenant Ciceri glance at each other and then set to work. They go down into the refrigerated hold and haul out some black plastic bags. They are not the originals, having been exchanged at the Livorno harbour authority HQ for other sacks containing old blankets. <\/em><\/p>\n

Mentre scaricano e caricano i sacchi, Augusto e Ciceri studiano attentamente la situazione: ci sono solo due uomini, quello sul molo e l’autista del furgone. Entrambi non sembrano essere armati pesantemente, solo un paio di pistole. Al momento del pagamento l’Ispettore Augusto fa un segnale a Ciceri e i due poliziotti estraggono le armi d’ordinanza celate sotto gli impermeabili.
\nWhilst they unload and load the bags, Augusto and Ciceri carefully study the situation: there are only two men, the one on the pier and the van driver. Neither seems to be heavily armed, just a couple of pistols. When the time comes to make the payment, Inspector Augusto makes a sign to Ciceri and the two policemen draw their weapons which are hidden beneath their waterproofs.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Fermi! Polizia! Mani in alto!” intima il Tenente Ciceri. I due malviventi non fanno in tempo a reagire, e vengono subito ammanettati. Il Capitano allunga la mano per prendere la valigetta coi soldi, ma l’ispettore Augusto lo blocca: “Vuole essere arrestato anche lei, Capitano?”
\n“Stop! Police! Hands up!” orders Lieutenant Ciceri. The two criminals don’t have time to react, and are immediately handcuffed. The captain holds out his hand to take the briefcase with the money, but Inspector Augusto stops him: “Do you want to be arrested as well, Captain?”<\/em><\/p>\n

Il povero Capitano sospira rassegnato: “Almeno i soldi per il costo della nafta me li potete dare? Ho una famiglia da sfamare” prova a protestare, senza per\u00f2 riuscire ad impietosire l’Ispettore Augusto, che si rivolge ai due arrestati: “Allora, dove bisogna portare questi sacchi?”
\nThe poor captain gives a sigh of resignation: “Can’t you at least give me the money for the diesel? I’ve got a family to feed” he tries to protest, without managing to evoke any sympathy from Inspector Augusto who turns to the two that are under arrest: “So, where do these bags need to be taken?”<\/em><\/p>\n

“Io non c’entro niente, mi pagano per portare i sacchi su alla villa e basta!” protesta l’autista del furgone.
\n“I’ve got nothing to do with it, they pay me to take the bags up to the villa, and that’s it!” the van driver protests.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Su alla villa? E l\u00ec chi c’\u00e8?”, risponde l’Ispettore Augusto.
\n“Up to the villa? And who’s up there?”, replies Inspector Augusto.<\/em><\/p>\n

Uomo incappucciato: “Non lo so, non ho mai visto nessuno di persona. Mi contatta per telefono.”
\nHooded man: “I don’t know, I’ve never seen anyone in person. They contact me by phone.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Ispettore Augusto: “Allora chiamalo e digli che la consegna \u00e8 avvenuta senza problemi e che stai andando su alla villa con la merce.”
\nInspector Augusto: “Then call him and tell him that the delivery has arrived without any problems and that you’re coming up to the villa with the merchandise.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Nel frattempo u<\/span>na motovedetta della Guardia Costiera<\/span>,<\/span> che <\/span>si <\/span>era tenuta<\/span> ad una certa distanza per non essere vista da Cala Maestra<\/span>, attracca al molo dopo che l’Ispettore Augusto ha dato il via libera.
\nIn the meantime a coastguard motor launch, which had stayed at a certain distance in order not to be seen from Cala Maestra, moors at the pier after Inspector Augusto has given the all clear.<\/em>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

D<\/span>opo aver consegnato il Capitano<\/span> e l’autista<\/span> alla Guardia Costiera, l’Ispettore Augusto e il Tenente Ciceri salgono sul <\/span>furgone frigorifero<\/span> con l’uomo incappucciato.
\nAfter having consigned the<\/em> Captain and the driver to the Coastguard, Inspector Augusto and Lieutenant Ciceri get into the refrigerated van together with the hooded man.<\/em>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Il <\/span>mezzo<\/span> parte alla volta della villa, che si scorge in distanza. Dopo aver percorso una serie di curve appare la facciata della villa. In piedi sulla veranda, incorniciato dalla luce della porta di casa aperta, si intravvede la silhouette di un uomo.
\nThe vehicle sets off towards the villa which can be seen in the distance. After having travelled around a series of curves the facade of the villa appears. Standing on the veranda, framed by the light of the open door, the silhouette of a man can be made out.\u00a0<\/em>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Dear readers, there are always new words and expressions to learn, even after years of study. How many did you glean from this chapter? It can be a very useful learning tool to recognise the correspondence between Italian words and the their Latin based English equivalent, e.g. prua<\/strong> = prow, scrutare<\/strong> = scrutinise, bruscamente<\/strong> = brusquely.
