I wish he&#8217;d leave me in peace, and I retreat indoors to close him out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8216;He&#8217; (&#8216;<strong>Lui<\/strong>&#8216;) is the sun (<strong>il sole<\/strong>), and right now he&#8217;s not my friend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Of course, everything is either a &#8216;he&#8217; or a &#8216;she&#8217; in Italian, it&#8217;s a quality that renders Latin languages both poetic and infuriatingly complex for English speakers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Often, the given gender of objects makes no sense to us. Other times, you can&#8217;t imagine it being any other way: <strong>la luna<\/strong> (the moon), and <strong>le stelle<\/strong> (the stars) are feminine, whereas <strong>il sole<\/strong> (the sun) is masculine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff\">As with every occasion, we have a specific vocabulary for this relentless blinding heat:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>che caldo!<\/strong> = it&#8217;s so hot (literally: what heat!) <em>or<\/em> <strong>che caldo che fa!<\/strong> (<em>literally: what heat it makes!<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>non sopporto pi\u00f9 questo caldo!<\/strong> = I can&#8217;t stand this heat anymore!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>che caldo, non ce la faccio pi\u00f9!<\/strong> = it&#8217;s so hot, I can&#8217;t stand it anymore!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>che afa!<\/strong> = it&#8217;s so stuffy!
