In autumn, winter, or spring I’m always pleased to see him …<\/span><\/p>\n

But now, in August, when he creeps round onto my patio, I don’t want him there. I wish he’d leave me in peace, and I retreat indoors to close him out.<\/p>\n

‘He’ (‘Lui<\/strong>‘) is the sun (il sole<\/strong>), and right now he’s not my friend.<\/p>\n

Of course, everything is either a ‘he’ or a ‘she’ in Italian, it’s a quality that renders Latin languages both poetic and infuriatingly complex for English speakers.<\/p>\n

Often, the given gender of objects makes no sense to us. Other times, you can’t imagine it being any other way: la luna<\/strong> (the moon), and le stelle<\/strong> (the stars) are feminine, whereas il sole<\/strong> (the sun) is masculine.<\/p>\n

As with every occasion, we have a specific vocabulary for this relentless blinding heat:<\/span><\/p>\n

che caldo!<\/strong> = it’s so hot (literally: what heat!) or<\/em> che caldo che fa!<\/strong> (literally: what heat it makes!<\/em>)<\/p>\n

non sopporto pi\u00f9 questo caldo!<\/strong> = I can’t stand this heat anymore!<\/p>\n

che caldo, non ce la faccio pi\u00f9!<\/strong> = it’s so hot, I can’t stand it anymore!<\/p>\n

che afa!<\/strong> = it’s so stuffy! (literally: what stuffiness!<\/em>)<\/p>\n

non sopporto quest’afa!<\/strong> = I can’t stand this stuffiness!<\/p>\n

scotta il sole!<\/strong> = the sun is burning hot! or<\/em> come scotta il sole!<\/strong> = how hot the sun is!<\/p>\n

picchia il sole!<\/strong> = the sun beats\/hits you! or<\/em> come picchia il sole!<\/strong> = how the sun beats\/hits you!<\/p>\n

oggi c’\u00e8 un caldo da morire!<\/strong> = today it’s hot enough to make you die<\/p>\n

questo caldo mi uccide!<\/strong> = this heat is killing me!<\/p>\n

cavolo, sudo come una bestia!<\/strong> = cabbage (euphemism for cazzo<\/strong><\/em>) I’m sweating like a beast!<\/p>\n

What we do when the heat gets unbearable (quando non ce la facciamo pi\u00f9<\/strong>):<\/span><\/p>\n

teniamo aperte tutte le finestre di notte<\/strong> = we keep all the windows open at night<\/p>\n

di giorno chiudiamo le persiane<\/strong> = we close the shutters during the day<\/p>\n

teniamo una bottiglia di acqua freschissima in frigo<\/strong> = we keep a bottle of very cool water in the fridge<\/p>\n

accendiamo il ventilatore<\/strong> = we turn the fan on<\/p>\n

cerchiamo di parcheggiare\u00a0sempre la macchina all’ombra<\/strong> = we always try to park the car in the shade<\/p>\n

andiamo alla gelateria a prendere un buon gelato<\/strong> = we go to the ice cream parlour for a nice ice cream<\/p>\n

… e sudiamo come bestie!<\/strong> = … and sweat like beasts!<\/p>\n

Or … we drive up over the mountain pass behind our village and head for Lago Santo, a beautiful mountain lake at 1,507 metres above sea level in the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Tosco-Emiliano<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n
