I suspect it\u2019s the former!<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">O.K., here are the solutions, with a bit of interesting information about each one.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Il naso:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>1. Ogni volta che dice una bugia, il suo naso si allunga. Come si chiama lo scrittore che l\u2019ha creato?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Answer: <strong>Carlo Collodi,<\/strong> whose real name was <strong>Carlo Lorenzini<\/strong> (Firenze, 1826-1890). The nom de plume <strong>Collodi <\/strong>was taken from the little town of Collodi, between Lucca and Pistoia in Tuscany, where his mother was born, and where Carlo spent most of childhood. Carlo\u2019s mother worked as a waitress for the Garzoni family who owned the beautiful <strong>Villa Garzoni<\/strong> in Collodi, and Carlo used to play and study there in the kitchen. If you happen to be in the area, the wonderful Italian gardens of Villa Garzoni are well worth a visit, as is <strong>il Parco di Pinocchio<\/strong>, a theme park dedicated to Collodi\u2019s famous character.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>2. Famosissimo scrittore e poeta fiorentino dal caratteristico naso aquilino, \u00e8 considerato il padre della lingua italiana. Chi \u00e8?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Answer: <strong>Dante Alighieri<\/strong>, author of <strong>La Divina Commedia <\/strong>which he wrote in <strong>vulgare <\/strong>(literally: the folk\u2019s language), as the Italian language was called at the time, in opposition to Latin, which was the language of the scholars.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>3. Usa il suo naso per trovare dei gustosissimi e costosissimi tuberi, i tartufi. Che cos\u2019\u00e8?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Answer: <strong>Il maiale <\/strong>(the pig) was the animal traditionally used here in Italy to search for truffles. However, the law doesn\u2019t allow its use anymore and it has been substituted by <strong>il cane <\/strong>(the dog), whose <strong>olfatto<\/strong> (sense of smell) is not as developed as the pig\u2019s, but has the advantage of being less environmentally destructive, and doesn\u2019t eat the precious tubers!<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>La bocca:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>1. \u00c8 famosissima in tutto il mondo per il suo sorriso enigmatico. In italiano \u00e8 comunemente chiamata \u2018Gioconda\u2019. Dove si trova?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Answer: <strong>Al Museo del Louvre a Parigi. <\/strong>Over the next few days we are going to write a series of articles about this famous painting. Look out for \u2018Tales of la Gioconda\u2019!<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>2. \u00c8 stata la prima macchina in grado di individuare le bugie, fu costruita dai<\/strong> <strong>Romani<\/strong> <strong>ed ancora oggi funziona. Come si chiama?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Answer: <strong>La Bocca della Verit\u00e0. <\/strong>A Roman sculpture from the first century, probably originally a fountain representing either the river Tiber, or the sea god Ocean, or a faun. The tradition of its magic powers as a lie detector goes back to the Medieval Ages, and is still popular to this day. It makes a memorable appearance in the 1953 film <strong>Vacanze Romane<\/strong> (Roman Holiday) with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. P.S. I haven\u2019t been to <strong>la Bocca della Verit\u00e0 <\/strong>with Geoff, so I haven\u2019t had the opportunity to test it out \u2026 yet!<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>3. Che cos\u2019\u00e8?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Answer: <strong>La museruola <\/strong>(the muzzle), which derives from the word <strong>muso<\/strong> (an elongated animal\u2019s face), e.g. <strong>il muso del cane <\/strong>(the dog\u2019s face), <strong>il muso del cavallo <\/strong>(the horse\u2019s face).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Gli occhi:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>1. Come si chiama?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Answer: <strong>Fortuna<\/strong>. Although Justice is also represented with a blindfold over her eyes, in Italian <strong>\u2018la dea bendata\u2019<\/strong> (the blindfolded goddess) is the specific title given to <strong>Fortuna<\/strong> (Fortune), whose Greek equivalent was the goddess Tyche. <strong>Fortuna<\/strong> distributes gifts which she extract from a cornucopia embraced within her left arm.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>3. Dicono che \u00e8 cieco, ma non \u00e8 vero; somiglia ad una biscia, ma non lo \u00e8; \u00e8 di colore marrone dorato. Che creatura \u00e8?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Answer: <strong>Orbettino <\/strong>(Slow worm). The name <strong>orbettino <\/strong>comes, erroneously, from <strong>orbo<\/strong> (blind). Despite its appearance, it\u2019s not a snake or a worm, but is a legless relative of the\u00a0 <strong>lucertola <\/strong>(lizard).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>\u2026 e per finire \u2026 il viso<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Frutta, verdura, fiori per rappresentare un viso!
