“Esiste davvero, o l’ho sognato? Dove si trova?” mi sono chiesta tante volte. Mi sembrava di ricordare che si trovasse da qualche parte vicino a Firenze, ma non ero sicura dove. Poi un giorno notai un articolo su un giornale che parlava appunto di un castello fantasma. Lessi l’articolo, ed eccolo! era lui … il castello della mia memoria.
\nI’ve asked myself many times: “Does it really exist, or did I dream it? Where is it?” I seemed to remember that it it was somewhere near Firenze, but I wasn’t sure where. Then one day I noticed an article in a newspaper that talked about a ghost castle. I read the article, and there it was! this was it … the castle from my memory.<\/em><\/p>\n

Finalmente scoprii il suo nome: era il Castello di Sammezzano, situato vicino a Reggello in provincia di Firenze.
\nI’d finally discovered its name: it was the Castle of Sammezzano, situated near Reggello in the province of Firenze.<\/em><\/p>\n

Una mattina di tanti anni fa, quando ero una ragazzina, mio padre annunci\u00f2: “Oggi andiamo a fare una gita, vi porto a vedere un posto speciale!” Cos\u00ec partimmo con la nostra piccola e spartana FIAT 127 color verde pisello, mio padre alla guida, la mamma sul sedile passeggeri accanto a lui, ed io e Francesco sul sedile posteriore.
\nOne morning many years ago, when I was a little girl, my father announced: “Today we’re going on a trip, I’m going to take you to a special place!” Thence we set off in our simple little pea green FIAT 127, my father at the wheel, my mother in the passenger seat next to him, and Francesco and I in the back seat.

Dopo un’oretta e mezza di macchina apparve in distanza, su una collina, un castello. Pap\u00e0 lo indic\u00f2 e disse: “Andiamo l\u00ec, a visitare quel castello!”
\nAfter an hour and a half’s drive a castle appeared on a hill in the distance. Dad pointed at it and said: “We’re going to visit that castle over there!”<\/em><\/p>\n

\nThe interior was really incredible, like something out of\u00a0 ‘One Thousand And One Nights’. I remember a succession of rooms, each one more marvellous than the other! There was a completely white room that seemed to be made of sugar icing, another covered in ceramic plates, another in the Byzantine style, then one that was, if possible, more fantastic than all the rest, the peacock room! I don’t have words to describe these marvels,\u00a0 just exclamation marks.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ma cos’\u00e8 il castello di Sammezzano? E’ una creazione fantastica del marchese fiorentino Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximens d’Aragona, che lo aveva ereditato nel 1818. Fra il 1852 e il 1889 Ferdinando modific\u00f2 completamente l’aspetto dell’originale edificio seicentesco, trasformandolo nell’esemplare pi\u00f9 importante d’Italia, e forse d’Europa, dello stile Orientaleggiante in voga in quel periodo.
\nSo what is the Castle of Sammezzano? It’s a fantastic creation by the Florentine marquis Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximens d’Aragona, who had inherited it in 1818. Between 1852 and 1889 Ferdinando completely modified the original appearance of the 17th century building, transforming it into the most important example in Italy, and perhaps Europe, of the Oriental stile which was in vogue at that time.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nell’immenso parco Ferdinando fece costruire delle fornaci per realizzare sul posto i materiali necessari: mattoni, piastrelle colorate e stucchi. Gli operai, che erano tutti del luogo, furono appositamente istruiti da lui stesso.
\nIn the immense park, Ferdinando had furnaces constructed in order to produce, in situ, the necessary material: bricks, coloured tiles, and stucco. The workers, who were all local, were specially instructed by himself. <\/em><\/p>\n

Il marchese Ferdinando si occup\u00f2 anche dell’organizzazione dell’immenso parco, che contiene la pi\u00f9 grande concentrazione di sequoie d’Europa, alberi che vennero fatti venire apposta dall’America.
\nMarquis Ferdinando also took charge of organising the huge park, which contains the largest concentration of sequoias in Europe. These trees had been purposely brought over from America.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nOn Ferdinando’s death, the castle was passed on to his heirs, and thence fell into various other hands. During the Second World War it was first occupied and looted by the Germans and then by the Allies. Finally, it was acquired by a corporation which, between 1970 and 1990, transformed it into a luxury hotel, visitable upon request. It was during that period that my father discovered it through his work, and took us there to visit it.<\/em><\/p>\n
