At this time of year many people are starting to dream of a summer vacation in Italy. Time to brush up on that rusty Italian vocabulary?
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

These days, of course, English is spoken in all the big tourist hotspots, so those places don’t present much of a challenge. But if, like us, you prefer to get off the beaten track, to discover Italy’s hidden gems and interact with the ‘natives’, then you’re going to need to know at least some basic phrases that will help you find your way around.<\/p>\n

Summer’s coming, although the late snow that fell last night would seem to belie that notion. Taken from my terrazza this morning: patches of snow amongst the emerald green foliage.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p><\/div>\n

Getting there:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Noleggiare una macchina<\/strong> (hiring a car) can be fun … if you’re prepared to run the gauntlet of Italian roads! But un pullman<\/strong> (a coach), un autobus<\/strong> (a bus), or un treno<\/strong> (a train) is more relaxing, and provides way more opportunities for interacting with the locals! Let’s find that train or bus, shall we?<\/p>\n

When referring to the railway station we tend to use the generic term stazione<\/strong> rather than the full title stazione ferroviaria<\/strong> (that’s a relief, isn’t it!). Here are a few ways of asking how to find it:
\nscusi, dov\u2019\u00e8 la stazione per favore?<\/strong> = excuse me, where is the railway station please?
\nor … scusi, dove si trova la stazione per favore?<\/strong> = excuse me, where is the railway station please? (literally: where can the station be found<\/em>)
\nor … scusi, mi pu\u00f2 dire come arrivare alla stazione per favore?<\/strong> = excuse me, can you tell me how to get to the railway station please?
\nIf you are looking for the bus station then you\u2019ll need to ask for la stazione degli autobus
\n<\/strong>and the bus stop is la fermata dell\u2019autobus<\/strong>:
\nscusi, dov\u2019\u00e8 la fermata dell\u2019autobus\u00a0per favore?<\/strong> = excuse me, where is the\u00a0bus stop\u00a0please?
\nor … scusi, c’\u00e8 una fermata dell’autobus qui vicino?<\/strong> = excuse me, is there a bus stop nearby?<\/p>\n

Staying there:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Unless you’ve brought a tent with you, or you’re going to sleep on a park bench, you’ll probably want to find un hotel<\/strong> (a hotel … with a silent ‘h’), un albergo<\/strong> (another word for a hotel), una pensione<\/strong> (a boarding house), un bed and breakfast<\/strong> (no translation needed!), un ostello<\/strong> (a hostel), or another form of lodgings.<\/p>\n

In order to avoid that park bench, head to the local Ufficio Turistico<\/strong>, or Pro Loco<\/strong>. To find your way there you can ask:
\nscusi, mi sa dire dove resta l’ufficio turistico\/la Pro Loco per piacere?<\/strong> = excuse me, are you able to tell me where the tourist office\/Pro Loco is please?
\nIn out of the way places you may not find a tourist office, in which case you’ll have to ask around. Bars are traditionally a good place to start:
\nscusi, c’\u00e8 una pensione\/un bed and breakfast, ecc. qui vicino?<\/strong> = excuse me, is there a boarding house\/B&B, etc. nearby?
\nOr perhaps you’ve played it safe and booked in advance, so you can ask:
\nscusi, mi pu\u00f2 dire dove si trova l\u2019Hotel Tramonto per piacere?<\/strong> = excuse me, can you tell me where I can find the Hotel Tramonto (Sunset Hotel) please?
\nscusi, come arrivo all\u2019Albergo dell’Anfiteatro per favore?<\/strong> = excuse me, how do I get to the Albergo Anfiteatro\u00a0 (Amphitheatre Hotel) please?
\nscusi, dove’\u00e8 l\u2019ostello della giovent\u00f9 per piacere?<\/strong> = excuse me, where is the youth hostel please?<\/p>\n

Eating there:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Well done, you’ve successfully avoided sleeping with i barboni<\/strong> (the tramps) in the park … but in the process you’ve worked up quite an appetite!<\/p>\n

Why don’t you ask that friendly ragazzo<\/strong> or ragazza<\/strong> who just served you un buon cappuccino<\/strong> al bar<\/strong> (a nice cappuccino at the bar) for some advice? Go on, be courageous!
\nyou could ask: mi pu\u00f2 consigliare un ristorante\/una pizzeria\/una trattoria?<\/strong> = can you recommend me a restaurant\/pizzeria\/trattoria? (una trattoria<\/strong> is usually more basic and cheaper than un ristorante<\/strong><\/em>)<\/p>\n

Sight seeing:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Good, we have a place to sleep and a nice full stomach, now it’s time to feed the mind and soul with beautiful things!:<\/p>\n

scusi, come si arriva all\u2019anfiteatro per favore?<\/strong> = excuse me, how do you get to the amphitheatre please? (literally: how does one arrive at …?)<\/em>
\nscusi, quanto dista il Museo Etrusco?<\/strong> = excuse me, how far is it to the Etruscan Museum?
\nscusi, dove si trova La Pinacoteca Nazionale per favore?<\/strong> = excuse me, where is the National Art Gallery please?<\/p>\n

And last, but certainly not least … finding a toilet!:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Public toilets are often few and far between in Italy, but let’s give it a go:
\nscusi, c\u2019\u00e8 un bagno\/una toilette\/un gabinetto qui vicino?<\/strong> = excuse me, is there a toilet nearby?
\nIf you don’t have any luck, you may find that your only option is going to a bar and using theirs, in which case you\u2019ll need to ask: scusi, posso usare il bagno\/la toilette\/il gabinetto\u00a0per favore?<\/strong> = excuse me, can I use the toilet please? Of course, it\u2019s more polite if you also buy something while you’re there, so treat yourself to another buonissimo caff\u00e8<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Summary and Notes<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

scusi<\/strong> = excuse me (when addressing strangers use the third person singular subjunctive scusi<\/strong>. In less formal situations you can use scusa<\/strong>. If you’re addressing more than one person use scusate<\/strong><\/em>)<\/p>\n

c\u2019\u00e8 …?<\/strong> = is there …?<\/p>\n

ci sono …?<\/strong> = are there …?<\/p>\n

mi pu\u00f2 dire …?<\/strong> = can you tell me …? (use mi potete dire …?<\/strong> if speaking to more than one person<\/em>)<\/p>\n

dov\u2019\u00e8 …?<\/strong> = where is …? (dove<\/strong> = where, \u00e8<\/strong> = it is<\/em>)<\/p>\n

dove sono …?<\/strong> = where are …? (dove<\/strong> = where, sono<\/strong> = they are<\/em>)<\/p>\n

dove si trova …?<\/strong> = where is …? (literally: where does one find<\/em>)<\/p>\n

come si arriva a …?<\/strong> = how do you get to …? (literally: how does one arrive at<\/em>)<\/p>\n

come arrivo a …?<\/strong> = how do you I get to …? (literally: how do I arrive at<\/em>)<\/p>\n

quanto dista …?<\/strong> = how far is it …?<\/p>\n

mi pu\u00f2 consigliare<\/strong> …?<\/strong> = can you recommend me? (if there’s more than one of you then use ci pu\u00f2 consigliare …?<\/strong> = can you recommend us?<\/em>)<\/p>\n
