Ho delle origini siciliane e irlandesi. Mio nonno \u00e8 di Messina, una citt\u00e0 della Sicilia, e mia nonna \u00e8 di Belfast, citt\u00e0 dell\u2019Irlanda. Sfortunatamente sono cresciuta senza conoscere mio nonno: \u00e8 morto prima che io nascessi. Per questa ragione, quando avevo 12 anni e dovevo scegliere una lingua da imparare a scuola, ho scelto l\u2019italiano. Volevo sentirmi pi\u00f9 vicino a lui ed alle mie origini italiane. Come tante famiglie americane, mio padre e le mie zie non hanno mai imparato la lingua dei loro antenati. Perci\u00f2 ad oggi sono l\u2019unica persona nella mia famiglia che parla la bella lingua italiana.<\/p>\n
I have Sicilian and Irish origins. My grandfather is from Messina, a city in Sicily, and my grandmother is from Belfast, a city in Ireland. Unfortunately, I grew up never having known my grandfather since he passed away before I was born. For this reason, when I was 12 years old and it was time to choose a language to study at school, I chose Italian. I wanted to feel closer to him and to my Italian origins. Like many American families, my father and my aunts never learned the native language of their ancestors. Therefore today I am the only one in my family who speaks it!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Mio nonno e mia nonna. Photo owned by me.<\/p><\/div>\n Mentre imparavo l\u2019italiano a scuola, ho cominciato anche con il francese, proseguendo i miei studi anche all\u2019universit\u00e0. Dopodich\u00e9 sono andata in Italia e Francia per continuare lo studio di queste due meravigliose lingue.<\/p>\n While I was learning Italian at school, I also began to learn French, and I continued to study both in college. After which I went to both Italy and France to continue studying these two amazing languages.<\/em><\/p>\n Mi sento molto fortunata ad avere conosciuto mia nonna irlandese, questo anche perch\u00e8 mi sentivo e mi sento tutt\u2019ora molto simile a lei. Margaret, cos\u00ec si chiamava, part\u00ec dal suo Paese per una nuova vita negli Stati Uniti. Nessuno capiva bene la ragione per cui lei voleva andare via dall\u2019Irlanda, dalla sua famiglia, dal suo lavoro, e dalla sua vita normale. Per\u00f2, mia nonna era convinta della sua decisione: \u00e8 partita dal suo paese d\u2019origine, ha conosciuto mio nonno a Rochester, e loro si sono sposati.<\/p>\n I feel very fortunate to have met my grandmother, also because I felt, and still feel today, very similar to her. Margaret, which was her name, left her country for a new life in the United States. Nobody understood the reason for which she wanted to leave Ireland, her family, her work, and her normal life. However, my grandmother was convinced of her decision: she left her home country, and then she met my grandfather in Rochester, and they got married.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n La mia nonna. Un\u2019americana non pu\u00f2 trasferirsi cosi facilmente senza i documenti giusti. Sette mesi fa, ho fatto domanda per la mia cittadinanza irlandese. Per la legge del luogo, mio padre era irlandese automaticamente, anche se non \u00e8 nato in Irlanda: grazie a lui potevo quindi fare domanda all\u2019Irlanda. Purtroppo, con la Brexit ci sono state delle complicazioni: la mia cittadinanza richiede molto pi\u00f9 tempo del previsto. Ho gi\u00e0 lasciato il mio lavoro, ho affittato la mia casa\u2026 sono pronta in ogni modo tranne che nel modo pi\u00f9 importante, cio\u00e8 quello che rende legittima la mia decisione!<\/p>\n However, there is a problem… citizenship, literally. An American cannot move so easily without the right documents. Seven months ago, I sent in my paperwork to request Irish citizenship. Their laws state that my father was automatically an Irish citizen, even if he was not born in Ireland: through him, therefore, I was able to request my own citizenship. Unfortunately, with Brexit there has been some issues: my citizenship is going to take a lot longer than previously thought. I have already left my job, I have rented out my home… I am ready in every way except the most important way, that is the one that renders legitimacy to my decision!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Allora, adesso, devo solo aspettare. Nel momento in cui avr\u00f2 i miei documenti, partir\u00f2 subito con niente pi\u00f9 che il mio cane e due valigie. Cosi voglio la mia vita in questo momento, anche se \u00e8 complicato, anche se la mia famiglia non lo capisce per nulla, anche se forse non \u00e8 la migliore decisione ora.<\/p>\n So, now, I have to just wait. The moment in which I have my documents, I will leave immediately with nothing more than my dog and two suitcases.
