Italian Partitive Article (L’articolo partitivo)<\/em><\/p>\n

Partitive articles are used to express an undetermined amount, and can be translated in English as \u201csome\u201d or \u201cany.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is formed by taking \u201cdi\u201d and adding the definite article of the noun. Below is a chart indicating each form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

You want to use partitive articles when talking about food or drink especially, but they can also be used to discuss abstract concepts. Take a look at these examples below:<\/p>\n

Vorrei mangiare del gelato stasera<\/p>\n

I would like to eat some ice cream tonight. <\/em><\/p>\n

Paul sta avendo dei problemi a lavoro.<\/p>\n

Paul is having some problems at work. <\/em><\/p>\n

The partitive article could be confused with articulated prepositions<\/em> (when a simple preposition like di combines with the definite article), so make sure to pay close attention to the context of the sentence.<\/p>\n

Articulated Prepositions (Le preposizioni articolate)<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDi\u201d means \u201cof,\u201d and therefore when saying \u201cof the\u201d in a sentence (such as when talking about possession), it is going to look the same as the partitive article, but there is a different meaning!<\/p>\n

Check out this example:<\/p>\n

Il fratello della mia amica<\/p>\n

My friend\u2019s brother (literally \u2013 the brother of my friend.)<\/em><\/p>\n

In Italian, the apostrophe s does not exist to talk about possession! That is when the articulated possession di + definite article<\/em> becomes useful.<\/p>\n

Attention<\/strong> \u2013 in front of the name of a person, you do not need a definite article. Example:<\/p>\n

Il cane di Giorgia si chiama Pip.<\/p>\n

Giorgia\u2019s dog is named Pip. (The dog of Giorgia is named Pip.)<\/em><\/p>\n
