With all the rain we\u2019ve had over the last few weeks wet and dry has become a bit of an obsession! Over the next couple of blogs we\u2019ll at some of the vocabulary that we use to describe these conditions. Let\u2019s begin with asciutto<\/strong> = dry:<\/p>\n

 ormai il bucato dev\u2019essere asciutto <\/strong>(the washing should be dry by now)<\/p>\n

we also have the verb asciugare<\/strong> = to dry: <\/p>\n

asciugati le mani<\/strong> (dry your hands)<\/p>\n

here are some other words and expressions that derive from asciutto<\/strong>\/asciugare<\/strong>: <\/p>\n

per asciugarsi le mani si usa l\u2019asciugamano<\/u><\/strong> (you use a towel<\/u> to dry your hands)<\/p>\n

l\u2019asciugatrice<\/strong> (the laundry dryer \u2013 noun fem.)<\/p>\n

l\u2019asciugacapelli<\/strong> (the hair dryer \u2013 noun masc.)<\/p>\n

la pastasciutta<\/strong> (literally dry pasta) any pasta dish, such as pasta ai funghi<\/strong>, pasta al pomodoro<\/strong>, etc., except soup with pasta in it, which we call pasta in brodo<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

with the meaning of \u2018lean\u2019: Giovanni ha un fisico asciutto<\/strong> (Giovanni has a lean physique)<\/p>\n

We have a colloquial expression \u2018restare a becco asciutto\u2019<\/strong> which means to not obtain something you were expecting:  pensavamo di  riavere tutti i soldi dall\u2019assicurazione, invece siamo restati a becco asciutto!<\/strong> (we thought we\u2019d get all the money back from the insurance, instead we got nothing!) <\/p>\n

We also have another word for dry: secco<\/strong> <\/p>\n

ti piace la frutta secca?<\/strong> (do you like dried fruit?)<\/p>\n

and the verb seccare<\/strong> = to dry:  <\/p>\n

le castagne vengono seccate nel seccatoio<\/u><\/strong> (the chestnuts are dried out in the chestnut drying barn<\/u>)<\/p>\n

Some other uses of secco\/seccare<\/strong>: <\/p>\n

soffro di pelle secca<\/strong> (I suffer from dry skin) <\/p>\n

\u00e8 un vino molto secco<\/strong> (it\u2019s a very dry wine)<\/p>\n

with the meaning of \u2018dead\u2019: quell\u2019albero \u00e8 secco<\/u> purtroppo<\/strong> (unfortunately that tree is dead<\/u>)<\/p>\n

with the meaning of \u2018to kill\u2019: l\u2019ha fatto secco al primo colpo<\/strong> (he killed it with the first shot)<\/p>\n

with the meaning of \u2018brusque\/offhand\/abrupt\u2019: mi ha dato una risposta secca<\/strong> (he gave me a brusque reply)<\/p>\n

with the meaning of \u2018to bore\u2019 or \u2018annoy\u2019: non mi seccare con queste domande<\/strong> (don\u2019t bore me with these questions)<\/p>\n

we also use the term seccatore<\/strong> to describe a boring or annoying person.<\/p>\n

N.B. secco<\/strong> is considered dryer than asciutto<\/strong>. For example, we generally use asciutto<\/strong> to mean \u2018not damp\u2019: oggi il tempo \u00e8 asciutto<\/strong> (the weather is dry today). Secco<\/strong>, on the other hand, means \u2018dried out\u2019, like dried fruit, firewood, and so on. We use the word siccit\u00e0<\/strong>, which comes from secco<\/strong>, to describe a drought.<\/p>\n

Finally we have essiccare<\/strong> = to dry out\/desiccate: si mettono i pomodori al sole per farli essiccare<\/strong> (the tomatoes are put out in the sun to desiccate)<\/p>\n
