Here in the US, we like to say we are “just browsing”. In Italy you would either say “vorrei dare un’occhiata<\/em>” or “vorrei guardare un po<\/em>‘.” Italians also like to guardare le vetrine\u00a0<\/em>or window shop.<\/p>\n If you need to try something on, you will need to find il camerino,\u00a0<\/em>the dressing room. You will either say “potrei provarlo<\/i>?” or “posso provarlo<\/em>?” Of course, the present tense of potere (posso<\/em> – can) works well and is common, but the conditional (potrei<\/em> – could) sounds more polite.<\/p>\n If the shop assistant asks you “potrei\/posso auitarla<\/em>?” they would like to know if you need help. You could let them know you are just “giving an eye” (dare un’occhiata<\/em>) as I wrote above, or you can accept.<\/p>\n Cerco qualcosa per…<\/em> – I’m looking for something for…<\/p>\n Cerco qualcosa di elegante\/di moda\/di comodo<\/em> – I am looking for something elegant\/fashionable\/comfortable<\/p>\n Che taglia? Chie misura?<\/em> – What size?<\/p>\n E’ troppo piccolo\/grande<\/em> – It’s too small\/big<\/p>\n Non mi sta bene<\/em> – It doesn’t look good on me<\/p>\n Lo adoro<\/em> – I love it<\/p>\n Quanto costa?<\/em> – How much is it?<\/p>\n Lo prendo<\/em> – I’ll take it (or la\/li\/le prendo<\/em>… these are direct object pronouns that will change according to the object talked about)<\/p>\n To checkout you will need to look for la cassa <\/i>(the cash register) and will have to pay in either liquido<\/em> or contanti<\/em> (cash) or la carta di credit0<\/em> (credit card).
