Let&#8217;s take a closer look at both:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>Comparativi di uguaglianza<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This type of comparative is used when comparing two things with similar qualities. In English, some examples would be &#8220;my cat is as big as your cat&#8221; or &#8220;I speak as well as you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To make a c<em>omparativi di uguaglianza\u00a0<\/em>we will use <strong><em>tanto<\/em><\/strong> or<strong> <em>cos\u00ec\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>in front of the adjective and then <strong><em>come<\/em><\/strong> or <strong><em>quanto<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Il mio gatto \u00e8 (tanto) grande quanto il tuo &#8211; <\/em>My cat is as big as your cat<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Io parlo (cos\u00ec) bene\u00a0come te &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>I speak as well as you<\/p>\n<p>*The &#8216;tanto&#8217; or &#8216;cosi&#8217; can be omitted, which is why they are in parentheses.<\/p>\n<p>Both forms are more or less interchangeable, unless you are comparing the quantity of two nouns or the frequency of two verbs, then in this case you must use<em> tanto &#8211; quanto. <\/em>(<em>Esempio: hai tanti compiti quanto me<\/em> &#8211; you have as much homework as me.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>Comparativi di disuguaglianza<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This type of comparative is used with comparatives of majority or minority (thus the inequality). In English, we would say &#8220;I am more handsome than you&#8221; or &#8220;she is richer than him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To make a c<em>omparativi di disuguaglianza <\/em>we will use <em><strong>pi\u00f9<\/strong>\u00a0(more)\u00a0<\/em>or <strong><em>meno <\/em><\/strong><em>(less)\u00a0<\/em>in front of the adjective and then <strong><em>che<\/em><\/strong> or <i><strong>di.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>We use &#8216;<em><strong>di<\/strong>&#8216;\u00a0<\/em>when we compare people or things and there is one adjective and when we use a number.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Sono pi\u00f9 bello di te<\/em> &#8211; I am more handsome than you<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>La borsa costa meno di 200 euro<\/em> &#8211; The purse costs less than 200 euros<\/p>\n<p>We use <em>&#8216;<strong>che<\/strong>&#8216;\u00a0<\/em>when there are two adjectives and one noun, two verbs and one adjective, and with a preposition before the noun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Il libro \u00e8 pi\u00f9 buffo che noioso &#8211; <\/em>The book is more funny than boring<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Ballare \u00e8 meno\u00a0divertente che cantare<\/em> &#8211; Dancing is less fun than singing<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>E&#8217; pi\u00f9 costoso a NYC che a Parigi<\/em> &#8211; It is more expensive in NYC than in Paris<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Irregular Comparatives\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are some irregular comparatives.<em>\u00a0<\/em>For example, you could not say &#8220;<i>pi\u00f9 buono&#8221;\u00a0<\/i>for &#8220;better.&#8221; Let&#8217;s look at these irregular comparatives:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i>*migliore <\/i>(adjective) <i>meglio <\/i>(adverb)\u00a0&#8211; better<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i>*peggiore <\/i>(adjective)<i> peggio <\/i>(adverb) &#8211; worse<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>maggiore<\/em> &#8211; bigger<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>minore<\/em> &#8211; smaller<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>superiore<\/em> &#8211; higher<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>inferiore<\/em> &#8211; lower<\/p>\n<p>*<em>Attenzione!\u00a0<\/em>There is a difference between these two when in the form of an adjective (description of nouns) and an adverb (description of a verb).
