  1. Mai mettere un cappello sul letto –\u00a0<\/em>Never put a hat on the bed<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Appoggiare un cappello sul letto di una casa \u00e8 segno di cattiva. Deriva dall\u2019abitudine dei medici, nei primi del novecento circa, che una volta arrivati nella casa del malato in fin di vita poggiavano il loro cappello sul letto del moribondo come un segno di rispetto.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

    Placing a hat on the bed of the house is a sign of bad luck.\u00a0It derives from the habit of doctors, in the early twentieth century, that once they arrived at the home of the sick person at the end of their life they placed their hair on the bed of the dying person as a sign of respect.<\/p>\n

    2.\u00a0Il gatto nero che attraversa la strada<\/em> – Black cat that crosses the street<\/p>\n

    Vedere un gatto nero che attraversa la strada \u00e8 segno di sventura. Nel Medioevo, i cavalli nella notte erano spaventati dagli occhi gialli dei gatti e per questo motivo si pensava che fossero una sorta di riflesso degli occhi del diavolo.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Seeing a cat cross the street is a sign of doom. In the Middle Ages, horses in the night were frightened by the yellow eyes of cats and for this reason it was thought that they were a kind of reflection of the devil’s eyes.<\/p>\n

    3.\u00a0Rompere uno specchio<\/em> – To break a mirror<\/p>\n

    L\u2019origine di questa superstizione va fino all\u2019antica Roma, dove gli specchi costavano molto e poche persone se potevano permetterne uno. Romperlo significava sprecare mesi di soldi messi da parte.<\/em><\/p>\n

    The origin of this superstition goes as far as ancient Rome, where mirrors cost a lot and few people if they could afford one. Breaking it meant wasting months of saved money.<\/p>\n

    4.\u00a0Venerd\u00ec, VIXI. – <\/em>Friday the 17th<\/p>\n

    Nella comune iscrizione sulle tombe degli antichi romani “VIXI”, che si pu\u00f2 tradurre come “ho vissuto”, si pu\u00f2 vedere l’anagramma del numero 17 in numeri romani, XVII. Il “ho vissuto” nel tempo passato significa morte. Successivamente, i romani iniziarono a considerare il numero come sfortunato.<\/em><\/p>\n

    In the common inscription on the tombs of the ancient Romans “VIXI”, which can be translated as “I lived”, you can see the anagram of the number 17 in Roman numerals, XVII. The “I lived” in the past tense means death. Subsequently, the Romans began to regard the number as bad luck.<\/p>\n

    5. Non mangiare le lenticchie a capodanno<\/em> – Not eating lentils on New Years Eve<\/p>\n

    La tradizione vuole che tante siano le lenticchie, tanti saranno i soldi che ti entreranno l\u2019anno nuovo. La storia sarebbe nata in epoca romana, quando venivano regalate borse piene di lenticchie, proprio come buon auspicio per l’inizio dell’anno. Il motivo: la loro forma ricorda quella delle monete.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Tradition has it that as long as there are many lentils, there will be a lot of money that will come to you in the new year. The story would be born in Roman times, when bags full of lentils were given away, just as a good omen for the beginning of the year. The reason: their shape resembles that of coins.<\/p>\n
