Interestingly enough, in the US there are instances where we use the metric system to talk about volume &#8211; like when you buy a nice bottle of wine (750 ml) or a 2 liter bottle of soda (pop)!<\/p>\n<p>1 liter = 1000 milliliters<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>Unit\u00e0 di misura\u00a0di\u00a0peso &#8211; <\/em><\/strong>weight<\/p>\n<table class=\"tableresp\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>USA<\/th>\n<th>Italia<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>1 <em>oncia (ounce)<\/em><\/td>\n<td>28,35 grammi (grams)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"alt\">\n<td>1 <em>libbra (pound)<\/em><\/td>\n<td>\u00a00,45 chilogrammi (kilograms)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>1000 grams is 1 kilogram, as opposed to having to memorize that there are 16 ounces in 1 pound. The simplicity of the Metric System vs. the complexity of the Imperial System is one reason for which many people <em>sbeffeggiare<\/em> (scoff) at having to memorize the units of measure in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll also hear Italians use <em>etti<\/em> (hectograms). 10 etti = 1 chilo and 1 etto = 3 ounces. <em>Vorrei due etti di prosciutto, per favore!\u00a0<\/em>I would like 2 hectograms (6 ounces) of prosciutto, please!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>La temperatura &#8211; <\/em><\/strong>temperature<\/p>\n<p><em>La temperatura in Italia \u00e8 espressa con la scala Celsius.<\/em> The temperature in Italy is expressed with the Celsius scale.<\/p>\n<p>Some conversions for temperature:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>0 degrees Celsius is equal to 32 degrees Fahrenheit. (The freezing point)<\/li>\n<li>32 degrees Celsius is 90 degrees Fahrenheit<\/li>\n<li>24 degrees Celsius is 75 degrees Fahrenheit<\/li>\n<li>10 degrees Celsius is 50 degrees Fahrenheit<\/li>\n<li>To convert Celsius (c) to Fahrenheit, use the formula (c x 1.8) + 32<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*<em>Attenzione<\/em>! Italians use\u00a0<em>la virgola <\/em>(the comma)\u00a0in numbers where the United States uses <em>il punto <\/em>(the period) and then Italians use<em> il punto<\/em> when Americans use <em>la virgola<\/em>. Example: 1.000,50<\/p>\n<p><em>Che ne pensate? <\/em>What do you think? Have you gotten confused in Italy before when confronting the Metric System?
