Perhaps you have noticed that the Italian literary scene is very much dominated by men. Elena Ferrante, however, is looking to shake things up. The NYT have commented on this phenomenon as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/12\/09\/books\/elena-ferrante-italy-women-writers.html\">The Ferrante Effect&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You may have heard of Ferrante, she is the author of the popular books series &#8220;The Neopolitan Novels&#8221; which have been adapted into the popular coming to age TV drama called &#8220;My Brilliant Friend.&#8221; If you haven&#8217;t seen it yet, I <strong>highly<\/strong> recommend it. According to the NYT article I linked above, &#8220;in the past two years, novels by women have accounted for roughly half of Italy&#8217;s top 20 best sellers in fiction &#8211; nearly double the percentage from 2017.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here is an excerpt from the beginning of the novel &#8220;L&#8217;amica geniale&#8221; (My Brilliant Friend):<\/p>\n<p><em>Era stata colpa sua. In alto, in basso, ci pareva sempre di andare incontro<\/em> <em>a qualcosa di terribile che, pur esistendo da prima di noi, era<\/em> <em>noi e sempre noi che aspettava. Quando si \u00e8 al mondo da poco<\/em> <em>\u00e8 difficile capire quali sono i disastri all\u2019origine del nostro sentimento del disastro, forse non se ne sente nemmeno la necessit\u00e0. I grandi, in attesa di domani, si muovono in un presente<\/em> <em>dietro al quale c\u2019\u00e8 ieri o l\u2019altro ieri o al massimo la settimana<\/em> <em>scorsa: al resto non vogliono pensare. I piccoli non sanno il significato di ieri, dell\u2019altro ieri, e nemmeno di domani, tutto \u00e8<\/em> <em>questo, ora: la strada \u00e8 questa, il portone \u00e8 questo, le scale sono<\/em> <em>queste, questa \u00e8 mamma, questo \u00e8 pap\u00e0, questo \u00e8 il giorno,<\/em> <em>questa la notte. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Io ero piccola e a conti fatti la mia bambola<\/em> <em>sapeva pi\u00f9 di me.
