Some time ago I wrote an article about the particella \u2018ci\u2019<\/font><\/strong>: <\/font>Tricky Little Words \u201cci\u201d<\/strong><\/font><\/a> . Let\u2019s revisit the topic and have a look at idiomatic verbs that use \u2018ci\u2019, with a few examples of their usage:<\/font><\/p>\n

Volere<\/strong> (to want) + ci = Volerci<\/font><\/strong> (to need, to take, as in quantity, time, materials, etc.)<\/u>:<\/font><\/p>\n

dalla stazione a casa di Giacomo ci vuole<\/font> un quarto d\u2019ora a piedi<\/strong> = to get from from the railway station to Giacomo\u2019s house takes a quarter of an hour by foot<\/font><\/p>\n

per fare un maglione da uomo ci vogliono<\/font> sette etti di lana <\/strong>= to make a man\u2019s jumper you need seven hundred grams of wool<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

Mettere<\/strong> (to put) + ci = <\/strong><\/font>M<\/font>etterci<\/strong><\/font> (to take, as in amount of time)<\/u>:<\/font><\/p>\n

ci<\/font> abbiamo<\/font> messo<\/font> tre giorni per andare da Pontremoli a Nottingham in Inghilterra in macchina<\/strong> = it took us three days to travel from Pontremoli to Nottingham in England by car<\/font><\/p>\n

l\u2019aereo ci<\/font> mette<\/font> due ore da Pisa a Londra<\/strong> <\/strong>= the plane takes two hours from Pisa to London<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

Arrivare<\/strong> (to arrive) + ci = Arrivarci<\/font><\/strong> (to get it, to be able to understand)<\/u>:<\/font><\/p>\n

questo problema di matematica \u00e8 troppo difficile, proprio non ci arrivo<\/font> <\/strong>= this maths problem is too difficult, I really can\u2019t understand it<\/font><\/p>\n

mi c\u2019\u00e8 voluto un mucchio di tempo, ma finalmente ci sono arrivata<\/font>! <\/strong>= it took me a long time, but I\u2019ve finally got it!<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

Essere<\/strong> (to be) + ci = Esserci<\/font><\/strong> (to get it, to be able to understand)<\/u>:<\/font><\/p>\n

ci sono<\/font>! Ho capito finalmente come funziona <\/strong>= I\u2019ve got it! I\u2019ve finally understood how it works<\/font><\/p>\n

allora, ci siete<\/font>? Avete capito la differenza fra il passato prossimo e l\u2019imperfetto? = <\/strong>So, have you got it? Have you understood the difference between \u2018passato prossimo\u2019 and \u2018imperfetto\u2019?<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

Cascare<\/strong> (to fall down) + ci = Cascarci<\/font><\/strong> <\/font>(to fall for it, or \u2018to swallow the bait\u2019)<\/u>:<\/font><\/p>\n

mi avevano detto che ci sarebbe stato anche il Presidente, ed io ci sono cascata<\/font>! <\/strong>= they told me that even the President would be there, and I fell for it!<\/font><\/p>\n

vediamo se Giovanni ci casca<\/font>! <\/strong>= let\u2019s see if Giovanni will swallow the bait!<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

Contare<\/strong> (to count) + ci = Contarci<\/font><\/strong> (to count on, to rely)<\/u>:<\/font><\/p>\n

promettimi che appena arrivi vai a trovare la mamma. Ci conto<\/font>, eh!<\/strong> = promise me that you\u2019ll go and see mum as soon as you arrive. I\u2019ll be counting on it, o.k.!<\/font><\/p>\n

Giovanni aveva promesso di aiutarmi col trasloco, ma poi ha disdetto all\u2019ultimo momento. Peccato, ci contavo<\/font><\/strong> = Giovanni promised to help me with the move, but at the last moment he said he couldn\u2019t do it. What a pity, I was relying on him.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

Entrare<\/strong> (to enter) + ci = Entrarci<\/font> <\/strong>(to have something to do with)<\/u>:<\/font><\/p>\n

allora ragazzi, chi ha fatto questo casino? <\/strong>(well then kids, who made this mess?) Io non c\u2019entro<\/font> niente!<\/strong> (I didn\u2019t have anything to do with it!)<\/font><\/p>\n

ma cosa c\u2019entra<\/font> quello?<\/strong> (but what\u2019s that got to do with it?)<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

Stare<\/strong> (to stay) + ci = Starci<\/font><\/strong> (to agree with, to join in)<\/u>:<\/font><\/p>\n

ci state<\/font> a fare il regalo di nozze per Maria tutti insieme? <\/strong>= do you agree that we should all get Maria\u2019s wedding present together?<\/font><\/p>\n

se stasera andate in pizzeria, io ci sto<\/font> <\/strong>= if you\u2019re going to the pizzeria this evening, I\u2019ll join you.<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
