Il nuovo vocabolario – New vocabulary<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last week I posted part of the first chapter of Harry Potter e la Pietra Filosofale,\u00a0<\/em>Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and I suggested reading books that you have read in the past in order to help with your Italian reading comprehension.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When reading books whose story you already know well, you can focus on smaller details such as grammatical constructions and vocabulary acquisition. You will be able to pick up vocabulary contextually, especially if you know the story well.<\/p>\n

These words will most likely become passive vocabulary for you, however, and not active – whereas you can recognize the word when read or heard, but you cannot use it in conversation yourself!\u00a0<\/strong>We will discuss ways below on how to make these new words active<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Here are some vocabulary words from the text that you may not have known, or you have deduced from the context:<\/p>\n

sciocchezze – <\/span><\/em>nonsense<\/span><\/p>\n

orgoglioso – <\/span><\/em>proud<\/span><\/p>\n

trapani – <\/span><\/em>drills<\/span><\/p>\n

corpulento – <\/span><\/em>corpulent (fat)<\/span><\/p>\n

nerboruto –<\/span><\/em> sinewy (lean and muscular)<\/span><\/p>\n

paio di baffi – <\/span><\/em>mustache<\/span><\/p>\n

la siepe del giardino – <\/span><\/em>the garden hedge<\/span><\/p>\n

figlioletto – <\/span><\/em>little son<\/span><\/p>\n

timore – <\/span><\/em>fear<\/span><\/p>\n

addirittura – <\/span><\/em>even<\/span><\/p>\n

fare finta<\/em> – to pretend<\/p>\n

buono a nulla\u00a0<\/span><\/em>(di<\/em>) – good for nothing\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

rabbrividire –<\/span><\/em> to shiver<\/span><\/p>\n

paraggi – <\/span><\/em>nearby<\/span><\/p>\n

i coniugi –<\/span><\/em> the spouses<\/span><\/p>\n

nuvoloso <\/span><\/em>– cloudy<\/span><\/p>\n

presagire – <\/span><\/em>to predict, to foretell<\/span><\/p>\n

canticchiando – <\/span><\/em>humming\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

chiacchierare –<\/span><\/em> to chat<\/span><\/p>\n

ininterrottamente – <\/span><\/em>continuously\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

seggiolone – <\/span><\/em>highchair<\/span><\/p>\n

squarciagola – <\/span><\/em>at the top of one’s lungs<\/span><\/p>\n

Now of course we want these words to be\u00a0 apart of our active vocabulary, so not only can you recognize them, but you can readily use them in conversation yourself. In order to do that, you must work with them in more ways than just through reading.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You should:<\/p>\n
