I think they are rich. – Penso che siano ricchi. <\/em><\/p>\n

I want you to work. – Voglio che tu lavori.<\/em><\/p>\n

The teacher wants the students to listen. – La maestra vuole che gli studenti ascoltino.<\/em><\/p>\n

He thinks that Caterina is wrong. – Crede che Caterina abbia torto.<\/em><\/p>\n

We\u2019re not sure he understands. – Non siamo sicuri che lui capisca.<\/em><\/p>\n

We doubt that she will arrive. – Dubitiamo che lei arrivi.<\/em><\/p>\n

Will you let me read? (formal) – Permetti che io legga?<\/em> OR Mi permitti di leggere?<\/em><\/p>\n

I insist that you sell these books. – Insisto che tu venda questi libri.<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s important that they speak with the teacher. – E’ importante che loro parlino con la maestra.<\/em><\/p>\n

I had mentioned that the bonus was particularly challenging, because it is an improbable hypothetical sentence.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

A hypothetical sentence (periodo ipotetico)<\/em> consists of two clauses. The first is a dependent clause introduced by se (if)
\nindicating a condition, a possibility, or a hypothesis. The second is an independent clause indicating the result of the condition.
\nA hypothetical sentence can express real situations, probable situations, and improbable situations.<\/p>\n

Real<\/strong>
\nSe vanno in Italia, visitano molte citt\u00e0.<\/em>
\n(If they go to Italy, they (will) visit many cities.)<\/p>\n

Probable<\/strong>
\nSe andassero in Italia, visiterebbero molte citt\u00e0.<\/em>
\n(If they went to Italy, they would visit many cities.)<\/p>\n

Improbable<\/strong>
\nSe fossero andati in Italia, avrebbero visitato molte citt\u00e0.<\/em>
\n(If they had gone to Italy, they would have visited many cities.)<\/p>\n

When unlikely situations are described, the se clause is in the imperfect subjunctive<\/strong> and the result clause is in the conditional<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Se lui avesse<\/strong> una macchina, andrebbe<\/strong> in montagna.<\/em>
\n(If he had a car, he would go to the mountains.)<\/p>\n

When impossible situations are described, the se clause is in the past perfect subjunctive<\/strong> and the result clause is in\u00a0the conditional perfect<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Se avesse studiato<\/strong>, avrebbe superato l’esame<\/strong>.<\/em>
\n(If she had studied, she would have passed the test.)<\/p>\n
