There are three types, real, probable, and improbable.<\/p>\n<p>Typically these clauses are introduced by <em>se<\/em> (if) but also could be introduced by phrases such as <em>nel caso che<\/em> (in the case that)<em>, <\/em>or <em>qualora <\/em>(so far as).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some of the answers from last weeks challenge:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Se costa troppo non lo compro.<\/em><br \/>\nIf it\u2019s too expensive, I will not buy it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Se avessi i soldi, viaggerei pi\u00f9 spesso.<\/em><br \/>\nIf I had the money, I would travel more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Se non capisci, te lo spiego di nuovo.<\/em><br \/>\nIf you don\u2019t understand, I will explain it again<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Se fossi nato in Italia, parlerei italiano.<\/em><br \/>\nIf I was born in Italy, I would speak Italian<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Se fossi uscito in tempo, non avresti fatto tardi.<\/em><br \/>\nIf you had left on time, you wouldn\u2019t have been late<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Se fossi un animale, quale vorresti essere?<\/em><br \/>\nIf you were an animal, which one would you be?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Se fossi ricco, comprerei una casa a New York.<\/em><br \/>\nIf I was rich, I\u2019d buy a house in New York<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">____________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>In the examples above we can see all three types of <em>il periodo ipotetico: <\/em>real, probable, and improbable.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Real (1st conditional)\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">This 1st Conditional example of<em> il periodo ipotetico<\/em> is used to discuss something which is happening in the present or will take place very soon in the future. These things will happen, or have a high chance of happening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Here are the possible 1st conditional sentences, depending upon the time:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Present simple + present simple\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Se costa troppo non lo compro.<\/em><br \/>\nIf it\u2019s too expensive, I will not buy it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Present simple + future simple\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Se non studi, non riuscirai.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">If you don&#8217;t study, you will not succeed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Future simple + future simple<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Se non piover\u00e0, giocheremo.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">If it does not rain, we will play.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Probable (2nd conditional)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The 2nd conditional is a probable hypothesis. The situations are unreal at the time, but could happen even if it&#8217;s unlikely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Imperfect subjunctive + present conditional<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Se avessi i soldi, viaggerei pi\u00f9 spesso.<\/em><br \/>\nIf I had the money, I would travel more.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Improbable (3rd conditional)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This <em>periodo ipotetico dell\u2019irrealt\u00e0\u00a0<\/em>(unreal conditional clause) is used to express the impossibility of something, because we already know it didn\u2019t happen (and there\u2019s no chance to go back in time and change it) or because the circumstances are impossible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Imperfect subjunctive + present conditional\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Se fossi nato in Italia, parlerei italiano.<\/em><br \/>\nIf I was born in Italy, I would speak Italian<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Pluperfect subjunctive + past conditional<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Se fossi uscito in tempo, non avresti fatto tardi.<\/em><br \/>\nIf you had left on time, you wouldn\u2019t have been late<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">_____________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>If you are having trouble with this, just know that native Italian speakers also make mistakes.
