Well, at least we got to the final! Not bad, considering that the Italian football team, commonly known as Gli Azzurri<\/strong> due to their blue shirts, went to the European Cup without great expectations, and finished in second place. In this video Cesare Prandelli<\/strong>, the coach of the Nazionale Italiana di Calcio<\/strong> (Italian National Football Team), comments on Italy\u2019s performance in the European Cup. After winning the world Cup in 2006 Italy went through a very difficult time, culminating in its disastrous performance in the 2010 World Cup. However, in this year’s European Football Championship gli Azzurri<\/strong> managed to fare sognare l\u2019Italia<\/strong> (make Italy dream), as Cesare Prandelli puts it at the end of the press conference which he gave the day after the dramatic final against Spain. Here is my transcription of Prandelli\u2019s speech with an English interpretation:<\/span><\/p>\n

Con tutta onest\u00e0, siamo in un Paese vecchio: abbiamo idee vecchie, abbiamo modalit\u00e0 vecchie, abbiamo veramente tante cose che avremmo, che dovremmo avere il coraggio di dire: \u201cOK, cambiamo!\u201d. Noi abbiamo avuto il coraggio di venire agli Europei e di dire: \u201cVogliamo cambiare\u201d. Chiaro che poi c\u2019\u00e8 il risultato, per\u00f2 non deve essere condizionante per un\u2019idea.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In all honesty, we are in an old Country: we have old ideas, we have old ways, we really have many things that we would have, that we should have had the courage to say: \u201cOK, let\u2019s change”!\u201d. We had the courage to come to the European Cup and to say: \u201cWe want to change\u201d. Certainly there\u2019s the end result, however it shouldn\u2019t affect the original idea.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Possiamo essere orgogliosi di quest\u2019Italia, possiamo essere veramente \u2026 eh\u2026 soddisfatti, perch\u00e9 abbiamo proposto una squadra che ha voluto fare un calcio propositivo, abbiamo proposto una squadra corretta, abbiamo proposto una squadra che \u00e8 andata oltre l\u2019aspetto sportivo.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

We can be proud of this Italy, we can be really \u2026eh\u2026 satisfied, because we have presented a team that wanted to play a proactive<\/span> <\/span>football, we have presented a team which plays correctly, we have presented a team which has gone beyond the sport aspect.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

La vittoria avrebbe fatto bene a tutti, ma probabilmente avrebbe anche fatto perdere l\u2019equilibrio a tanti. Secondo me ci vuole tempo per arrivare ad avere una continuit\u00e0. Eh\u2026 Quello che voglio far capire \u00e8 che c\u2019\u00e8 la voglia di cambiamento, c\u2019\u00e8 la voglia di rinnovo. Se noi vogliamo veramente cambiare, rinnovare, lo dobbiamo fare per lungo tempo. Non dobbiamo vivere solo attraverso un risultato. Certo, sarebbe stata una cosa straordinaria, ma forse non siamo ancora pronti, forse non siamo ancora pronti! e nel momento che saremo pronti a vincere, saremo pronti a ri<\/em>vincere, saremo pronti per continuare a vincere, quindi per anni e anni avremo una continuit\u00e0.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Victory would have done everybody good, but probably it would also have made many lose their balance. I believe that it takes time to manage to have continuity. Eh\u2026 What I want people to understand is that there is the desire for change, there is the desire for renewal. If we want to really change, renew, we have to do it in the long term. We mustn\u2019t just live through a single result. Of course, it would have been an extraordinary thing, but maybe we are not ready yet, maybe we are not ready yet! and in the moment when are ready to win, we will be ready to win again, we will be ready to carry on winning, then we\u2019ll have continuity for years and years.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Eh\u2026 L\u2019unico rammarico, ma proprio l\u2019unico, \u00e8 di non aver affrontato questa squadra con due giorni di riposo in pi\u00f9, perch\u00e9 avremmo sicuramente fatto un\u2019altra partita, ma \u00e8 l\u2019unico, piccolo, rammarico.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Eh\u2026 the only regret, really the only one, is not having faced this team (Spain) with two more days of rest, because we would have certainly played a different match, but that\u2019s the only, little, regret.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u2026 ma abbiamo cercato di costruire una squadra di nazionale per la prima volta come una mentalit\u00e0 di club.\u00a0 Questo dobbiamo fare!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
