In a recent post, I mentioned the enormous task which we\u00a0have been\u00a0undertaking\u00a0di<\/strong> traslocare<\/strong> (of moving) my elderly parents to an apartment close to where we live. Mia mamma ha ottant\u2019anni\u00a0mentre mio babbo ne ha ottantotto\u00a0ed anche se sono ancora\u00a0abbastanza in gamba hanno bisogno di un po\u2019 di aiuto.<\/strong> (My mum is eighty years old and my dad is eighty eight and even if they\u2019re still quite able they need a bit of help). So, we\u2019ve finally finished the trasloco, and\u00a0my parents are now fifteen minutes away instead of an hour and a half. They have a nice cozy apartment on the quarto piano<\/strong> (forth floor) of a fairly modern palazzo<\/strong> (apartment block), and there is, of course, un ascensore<\/strong>! (a lift). Previously, when they lived in Lucca, their apartment was on the quinto piano<\/strong> (fifth floor), and the reason I mention this is because I want to tell you about the ingenious method used by i traslocatori<\/strong> (the removal company) to transfer all my parents\u2019 possessions from a fifth floor apartment in Lucca to a forth floor apartment in Pontremoli. This method is very common here in Italy, and it involves an aggeggio<\/strong> (gadget) called una piattaforma aerea<\/strong> (an aerial platform).<\/span><\/p>\n

La piattaforma aerea is a kind of mobile funicular which the traslocatori towed behind one of their camion<\/strong> (lorries). They arrived as a team of four, and immediately set about their well rehearsed routine with the kind of efficiency that is a pleasure to watch (especially when you are paying!).\u00a0Barriers and signs were erected in the street to warn traffic and pedestrians, and the platform,\u00a0now detached from the lorry, was swung into position directly below the balcony. Levers were\u00a0pulled, buttons pressed, and the telescopic \u2018rail\u2019 on which the platform was to run, began its lonely journey up\u00a0to the fifth floor. In the meantime, two of the\u00a0operai<\/strong> (workers) had already come up in the lift and started shifting the boxes, which we had spent weeks packing, and the mobili<\/strong> (furniture) towards the balcony ready for loading onto the platform.<\/span><\/p>\n

After four hours the apartment was a rather sad desolate space, empty\u00a0of all except memories and echoes. We\u00a0took with us everything except the kitchen sink! The operai had even dismantled the fitted kitchen and wardrobes,\u00a0slotting\u00a0everything into their vehicles like a kind of Chinese puzzle.\u00a0Stanchi morti<\/strong> (dead tired) my husband and I\u00a0set off on the long journey home, feeling a mixture of\u00a0apprehension and relief: the following day would bring phase two, the reverse process of moving everything into the new apartment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Day two: the traslocatori arrive punctually and once again we witness the same\u00a0impressive teamwork as the piattaforma\u00a0is\u00a0put into action. Not only\u00a0are the removal men very efficient, they are also polite and helpful, and in the eight hours\u00a0or so that we are in their company\u00a0there is\u00a0hardly a moment\u00a0in\u00a0which\u00a0they\u00a0aren\u2019t singing Canzoni Napoletane <\/strong>(Neopolitan Songs), except, of course, when they pause for their \u2018santo\u2019 caff\u00e8<\/strong> (‘holy’ coffee). On the ground floor, directly below the new apartment, there is, very conveniently, a\u00a0nice bar, and after a couple of hours\u00a0I noticed\u00a0an unfamiliar object arriving on the platform. As it neared the balcony I realized that it was a round tray with three cups of espresso on it. The singing ceased, and the two minute ritual of refueling with coffee began, che buono! The tray was sent back down again with shouts of \u2018grazie\u2019, and the singing recommenced\u00a0accompanied by the sounds of\u00a0electric screwdrivers and the occasional grunt as a large box was shifted, una vera opera per il ventunesimo secolo!<\/strong> (a\u00a0true\u00a0opera for the twenty first century!).<\/span><\/p>\n
