We\u2019ll begin by looking at different ways of describing the wind:<\/span><\/p>\n

alito di vento <\/strong>(breath of wind), e.g. che caldo,<\/strong>\u00a0non c\u2019\u00e8 neanche un alito di vento<\/strong> (it\u2019s so hot, there isn\u2019t a breath of wind)<\/p>\n

venticello<\/strong> (light wind), e.g. oggi c\u2019\u00e8 un venticello fresco<\/strong> (today there\u2019s a fresh light wind)<\/p>\n

brezza<\/strong> (breeze), e.g. le foglie si muovono appena nella brezza serale<\/strong> (the leaves are moving slightly in the evening breeze)<\/p>\n

spiffero<\/strong> (draft), e.g. gli infissi sono marci e fanno entrare un mucchio di spifferi<\/strong> (the window frames are rotten and they let in a lot of drafts)<\/p>\n

raffiche di vento<\/strong> (gusts of wind), e.g. attenzione, raffiche di vento sul viadotto!<\/strong> (warning, gusts of wind on the viaduct!)<\/p>\n

ventaccio<\/strong> (horrible wind), e.g. come odio questo ventaccio!<\/strong> (how I hate this horrible wind!)<\/p>\n

burrasca<\/strong> (gale), e.g. c\u2019\u00e8 burrasca in arrivo<\/strong> (there\u2019s a gale on its way)<\/p>\n

uragano<\/strong> (hurricane), e.g. l\u2019uragano di stanotte ha fatto molti danni alle case<\/strong> (last night\u2019s hurricane did a lot of damages to the houses)<\/p>\n

bufera di vento<\/strong> (wind storm), e.g. mamma mia che bufera di vento, non si riesce a stare in piedi<\/strong> (mama mia what a wind storm, it\u2019s impossible to stay upright)<\/p>\n

Now let\u2019s look at the verbs traditionally associated with the wind:<\/span><\/p>\n

alzarsi, <\/strong>and levarsi<\/strong> (to rise), e.g. si \u00e8 alzato il vento<\/strong> (the wind has risen)<\/p>\n

spirare, soffiare<\/strong>, and tirare<\/strong> (to blow), e.g. questa mattina tirava un vento gelido<\/strong> (this morning a freezing wind was blowing)<\/p>\n

fischiare,<\/strong> and sibilare<\/strong> (to whistle), e.g. senti come fischia il vento!<\/strong> (listen how the wind is whistling)<\/p>\n

ululare <\/strong>(to howl), e.g. si sentiva il vento che ululava minaccioso nella notte buia<\/strong> (you could hear the wind howling menacingly in the dark night)<\/p>\n

calmarsi<\/strong>, and placarsi<\/strong> (to calm down), e.g. finalmente la burrasca si \u00e8 placata<\/strong> (finally the gale has calmed down)<\/p>\n

cadere<\/strong> (to drop), e.g. \u00e8 caduto il vento<\/strong> (the wind has dropped)<\/p>\n

cessare<\/strong> (to stop), meno male che \u00e8 cessato il vento!<\/strong> (Thank God the wind has stopped!)<\/p>\n

cambiare<\/strong>, and mutare<\/strong> (to change), e.g. \u00e8 cambiato il vento e fa pi\u00f9 freddo<\/strong> (the wind has changed and it\u2019s colder)<\/p>\n

girare<\/strong> (to turn), e.g. \u00e8 girato il vento, adesso soffia dal mare<\/strong> (the wind has turned, now it\u2019s blowing from the sea)<\/p>\n
