Here, as promised are the answers to last week\u2019s quiz about \u2018ne\u2019<\/strong>, with a few explanatory notes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ne<\/strong> used as a substitute for \u2018of it\u2019 or \u2018of them\u2019, in order to avoid repetition when talking about the quantity of something which has already been mentioned in the conversation.<\/p>\n

1. Quante banane vuoi? <\/strong>(Give me six please) \u2026 Dammene sei per favore<\/em> N.B. <\/font><\/strong><\/font>here, we combine da\u2019, mi<\/strong> and ne<\/strong> to make dammene<\/strong> (give me of them)<\/font><\/p>\n

2. Quanti gatti ha la Dina? <\/strong>(She\u2019s got four) \u2026 Ne ha quattro<\/strong><\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

3. Quante persone c\u2019erano alla festa? <\/strong>(There where a lot!) \u2026  Ce n\u2019erano tante <\/strong><\/em><\/font>N.B.<\/strong> ci<\/strong> (there) becomes ce<\/strong>, and we drop the e<\/strong> from ne<\/strong> when it\u2019s followed by erano<\/strong> to make n\u2019erano<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n

4. Ci sono degli spazi liberi nel parcheggio? <\/strong>(Yes, there are  still two or three)\u2026  S\u00ec, ce ne sono ancora due o tre <\/em><\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n

5. Ci sono rimaste delle uova? <\/strong>(Yes, there are two left) \u2026 S\u00ec ce ne sono rimaste due<\/font><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

6. Ci sono abbastanza mele per fare la torta? <\/strong>(No, I\u2019ll need some more) \u2026 No, ne avr\u00f2 bisogno di altre\/un po\u2019 di pi\u00f9<\/font><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

7. Quanti anni avevi quando  sei andata in Inghilterra per la prima volta? <\/strong>(I was six) \u2026 ne avevo sei<\/em> <\/strong>N.B. <\/strong>literally \u2018I had six of them (years)\u2019<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

8. Ti piacciono queste camicie?<\/strong> (Yes, if I had enough money I\u2019d buy two of them) \u2026 S\u00ec, se avessi abbastanza soldi ne comprerei due <\/strong><\/em><\/font>N.B.<\/strong> Here we use the standard construction of subjunctive followed by conditional: se avessi<\/strong> (\u2018if I had\u2019, subjunctive) ne comprerei<\/strong>  (I would buy of them\u2019, conditional)<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ne <\/strong>as a substitute for \u2018of it\u2019\/ \u2018of them\u2019 or \u2018about it\u2019\/ \u2018about them\u2019, with verbs that are normally followed by the preposition \u2018di\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> using avere bisogno di:<\/em>  Hai bisogno della matita?<\/strong> (No, I don\u2019t need it) \u2026 No, non ne ho bisogno<\/font><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

2. <\/strong>using dimenticarsi di:<\/em> Ti sei ricordato di telefonare a Mario? <\/strong>(No, I forgot about it) \u2026 No, me ne sono dimenticato\/a<\/font><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

3. <\/strong>using accorgersi di:<\/em> Hai visto che c\u2019era anche Mattia alla festa? <\/strong>(No, I wasn\u2019t aware of it) \u2026 No, non me n\u2019ero accorto\/a <\/strong><\/em><\/font>N.B. <\/strong>Here once again we drop the e<\/strong> from ne<\/strong> an add an apostrophe to make n\u2019ero<\/strong> (of it I was).<\/font><\/p>\n

4. <\/strong>using parlare di: <\/em>Come \u00e8 andata ieri sera? <\/strong>(Let\u2019s not even talk about it!) \u2026 Non ne parliamo neanche!<\/font><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

5. <\/strong>using stancarsi di or stufarsi di: <\/strong><\/em>Hai ascoltato tutto il CD che ti ho prestato?<\/strong> (No, I got fed up with it after three tracks) \u2026 No, me ne sono stufato\/a dopo tre brani <\/font><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

6. <\/strong>using pentirsi di: <\/em>\u00c8 stata una giornata un po\u2019 stressante, vero? <\/strong>(Yes, but I don\u2019t regret it) \u2026 S\u00ec, ma non me ne pento<\/font><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

7. <\/strong>using interessarsi di or occuparsi di: <\/em>Chi si interessa della prenotazione del ristorante? <\/strong>(Giorgio is taking care of it) \u2026 S<\/font>e ne sta occupando\/interessando Giorgo <\/font><\/font><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

8. <\/strong>using innamorarsi di: <\/em>Pensi che Mario sia innamorato di Lucia? <\/strong>(Yes, he fell in love with her straight away) \u2026 S\u00ec, se n\u2019\u00e8 innamorato subito <\/strong><\/em><\/font>N.B. si<\/strong> (third person singular reflexive pronoun) becomes se<\/strong>, ne<\/strong> looses the e<\/strong> and becomes n<\/strong> followed by an apostrophe and  \u00e8<\/strong> (is): n\u2019\u00e8<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n
