I was recently asked the question: \u201cwhat is the difference between <strong>\u2018pi\u00f9\u2019<\/strong> and <strong>\u2018di pi\u00f9\u2019<\/strong>?\u201d Probably the best way to illustrate the difference between the two is with a few examples: <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\"><strong>\u201cMario ha <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">studiato di pi\u00f9<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (Mario has <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">studied more<\/span>), as opposed to: <strong>\u201cMario ha studiato <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pi\u00f9 di Giovanni<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (Mario has studied <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">more than Giovanni<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\"><strong>\u201cse vuoi dimagrire, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">cammina di pi\u00f9<\/span>!\u201d<\/strong> (if you want to loose weight, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">walk more<\/span>!), as opposed to: <strong>\u201cse sei senza fiato, cammina <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pi\u00f9 lentamente<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (if you are out of breath, walk <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">more slowly<\/span>). <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\"><strong>\u201cstanotte <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ho dormito di pi\u00f9<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (last night <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">I slept more<\/span>), as opposed to: <strong>\u201cstanotte ho dormito <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pi\u00f9 profondamente<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (last night I slept <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">more deeply<\/span>).<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\"><strong>\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">studier\u00f2 di pi\u00f9<\/span> l\u2019italiano\u201d<\/strong> (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">I will study<\/span> Italian <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">more\/harder<\/span>) as opposed to: <strong>\u201cstudier\u00f2 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pi\u00f9 italiano<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (I will study <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">more Italian<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\">As you can see from the above examples when you use \u2018<strong>pi\u00f9<\/strong>\u2019 it must be followed by either a comparison: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>pi\u00f9 di Giovanni<\/strong><\/span>, an adverb: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>pi\u00f9 lentamente<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0a noun: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>pi\u00f9 italiano<\/strong><\/span>, or an adjective: <strong>oggi il tempo \u00e8 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pi\u00f9 brutto<\/span> <\/strong>(today the weather is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">worse<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\"><strong>\u2018Di pi\u00f9\u2019<\/strong> on the other hand is used to strengthen or augment the preceding verb: <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">cammina di pi\u00f9<\/span>!<\/strong>,<strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ho dormito di pi\u00f9<\/span><\/strong>,<strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">studier\u00f2 di pi\u00f9<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\">Sometimes this can be confusing, e.g. \u00a0<strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\">\u201cstanotte <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ho dormito di pi\u00f9<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cstanotte ho dormito <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pi\u00f9 a lungo<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> both mean \u2018last night I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">slept more<\/span>\u2019. The difference is that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>ho dormito di pi\u00f9<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<em>implies<\/em> that I slept longer, whereas <strong>ho dormito <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pi\u00f9 a lungo<\/span><\/strong> explicitly states that I slept <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>pi\u00f9 a lungo<\/strong><\/span> (longer).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;font-family: Verdana\">Note that\u00a0in negative sentences \u2018<strong>pi\u00f9<\/strong>\u2019 is used after <strong>\u2018non\u2019<\/strong> to express \u2018any more\u2019 or \u2018again\u2019, for example: <strong>\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">non<\/span> gli parlo <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pi\u00f9<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">don\u2019t<\/span> talk to him <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">any more<\/span>), <strong>\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">non<\/span> faccio <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pi\u00f9<\/span> il ciclismo\u201d<\/strong> (I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">don\u2019t<\/span> go cycling <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">any more<\/span>), <strong>\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">non<\/span> ci andr\u00f2 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">pi\u00f9<\/span>!\u201d<\/strong> (I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">won\u2019t<\/span> go there <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">again<\/span>!).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes readers\u00a0ask me questions which I feel are better answered\u00a0with a new blog because they deal with important grammatical points.
