Sometimes readers\u00a0ask me questions which I feel are better answered\u00a0with a new blog because they deal with important grammatical points. I was recently asked the question: \u201cwhat is the difference between \u2018pi\u00f9\u2019<\/strong> and \u2018di pi\u00f9\u2019<\/strong>?\u201d Probably the best way to illustrate the difference between the two is with a few examples: <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMario ha studiato di pi\u00f9<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (Mario has studied more<\/span>), as opposed to: \u201cMario ha studiato pi\u00f9 di Giovanni<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (Mario has studied more than Giovanni<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cse vuoi dimagrire, cammina di pi\u00f9<\/span>!\u201d<\/strong> (if you want to loose weight, walk more<\/span>!), as opposed to: \u201cse sei senza fiato, cammina pi\u00f9 lentamente<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (if you are out of breath, walk more slowly<\/span>). <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cstanotte ho dormito di pi\u00f9<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (last night I slept more<\/span>), as opposed to: \u201cstanotte ho dormito pi\u00f9 profondamente<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (last night I slept more deeply<\/span>).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cstudier\u00f2 di pi\u00f9<\/span> l\u2019italiano\u201d<\/strong> (I will study<\/span> Italian more\/harder<\/span>) as opposed to: \u201cstudier\u00f2 pi\u00f9 italiano<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (I will study more Italian<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

As you can see from the above examples when you use \u2018pi\u00f9<\/strong>\u2019 it must be followed by either a comparison: pi\u00f9 di Giovanni<\/strong><\/span>, an adverb: pi\u00f9 lentamente<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0a noun: pi\u00f9 italiano<\/strong><\/span>, or an adjective: oggi il tempo \u00e8 pi\u00f9 brutto<\/span> <\/strong>(today the weather is worse<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Di pi\u00f9\u2019<\/strong> on the other hand is used to strengthen or augment the preceding verb: cammina di pi\u00f9<\/span>!<\/strong>, ho dormito di pi\u00f9<\/span><\/strong>, studier\u00f2 di pi\u00f9<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes this can be confusing, e.g. \u00a0\u201cstanotte ho dormito di pi\u00f9<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong> and \u201cstanotte ho dormito pi\u00f9 a lungo<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> both mean \u2018last night I slept more<\/span>\u2019. The difference is that ho dormito di pi\u00f9<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0implies<\/em> that I slept longer, whereas ho dormito pi\u00f9 a lungo<\/span><\/strong> explicitly states that I slept pi\u00f9 a lungo<\/strong><\/span> (longer).<\/span><\/p>\n

Note that\u00a0in negative sentences \u2018pi\u00f9<\/strong>\u2019 is used after \u2018non\u2019<\/strong> to express \u2018any more\u2019 or \u2018again\u2019, for example: \u201cnon<\/span> gli parlo pi\u00f9<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (I don\u2019t<\/span> talk to him any more<\/span>), \u201cnon<\/span> faccio pi\u00f9<\/span> il ciclismo\u201d<\/strong> (I don\u2019t<\/span> go cycling any more<\/span>), \u201cnon<\/span> ci andr\u00f2 pi\u00f9<\/span>!\u201d<\/strong> (I won\u2019t<\/span> go there again<\/span>!).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
