Numeri ordinali<\/strong> (ordinal numbers) indicate, as the name suggests, order, succession, or classification. These numbers are regular adjectives, and therefore\u00a0change gender and pluralize depending on the noun to which they refer. The following list shows the ordinal numbers in their masculine singular form:<\/span><\/p>\n

primo<\/strong> \u2013 first<\/span><\/p>\n

secondo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 second<\/span><\/p>\n

terzo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 third<\/span><\/p>\n

quarto<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 fourth<\/span><\/p>\n

quinto<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 fifth<\/span><\/p>\n

sesto<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 sixth<\/span><\/p>\n

settimo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 seventh<\/span><\/p>\n

ottavo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 eighth<\/span><\/p>\n

nono<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 ninth<\/span><\/p>\n

decimo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 tenth<\/span><\/p>\n

From ten onwards the ordinal numbers are constructed by adding the suffix \u2018-esimo\u2019<\/strong> to the\u00a0root of the cardinal numbers. For cardinal numbers see the following article: <\/em><\/span>Numeri Cardinali<\/em><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

undicesimo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 eleventh<\/span><\/p>\n

dodicesimo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 twelfth<\/span><\/p>\n

tredicesimo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 thirteenth<\/span><\/p>\n

diciottesimo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 eighteenth<\/span><\/p>\n

ventesimo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 twentieth<\/span><\/p>\n

trentesimo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 thirtieth<\/span><\/p>\n

cinquantesimo<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 fiftieth<\/span><\/p>\n

ennesimo – <\/strong>nth<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are some everyday example of the use of ordinal numbers:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Oggi \u00e8 il primo giorno<\/span> di primavera\u2019<\/strong> (today is the first day of spring), in which primo<\/strong> refers to giorno<\/strong>, so it is masculine singular.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Questa \u00e8 la terza primavera<\/span> di fila che veniamo qua in vacanza\u2019<\/strong> (this is the third spring in a row that we\u2019ve come here on holiday), in which terza<\/strong> refers to primavera<\/strong>, so it is feminine singular.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Domani \u00e8\u00a0l\u2019ottantanovesimo compleanno<\/span> del padre di Francesco\u2019<\/strong> (tomorrow is\u00a0Francesco\u2019s father\u2019s\u00a0eighty-ninth birthday), in which ottantanovesimo<\/strong>\u00a0 refers to compleanno<\/strong>, so it is masculine singular.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018\u00c8 una tradizione che risale al dodicesimo secolo<\/span>\u2019<\/strong> (it\u2019s a tradition that goes back to the twelfth century), in which dodicesimo<\/strong> refers to secolo<\/strong>, so it is masculine singular.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Gli Americani<\/span> sono stati i primi<\/span> ad andare sulla Luna\u2019<\/strong> (the Americans were the first to go to the moon), in which primi<\/strong> refers to Americani<\/strong>, so it is masculine plural.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Le prime<\/span> tre sere<\/span> lo spettacolo era tutto esaurito\u2019<\/strong> (the first three evenings the show was completely sold out), in which prime<\/strong> refers to sere<\/strong>, so it is feminine plural.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ordinal numbers are written numerically in the following way:\u00a0for the masculine form;\u00a01o<\/strong>, 2o<\/strong>, 3o<\/strong>, etc. for the feminine form; 1a<\/strong>, 2a<\/strong>, 3a<\/strong>, etc. The plural forms, e.g. 1i<\/strong>, 2i<\/strong> or 3e<\/strong> 4e<\/strong>, are rarely used.\u00a0N.B. These numbers are usually written with a small\u00a0o<\/strong> or a<\/strong> to the upper right of the numeral but unfortunately I can\u2019t reproduce this with my keyboard.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In certain situations Roman numerals are used, e.g. Enrico VIII<\/strong> (Henry the Eighth), Papa Benedetto XVI<\/strong> (Pope Benedict the Sixteenth).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
