In my \u2018Colloquial Italian\u2019 blogs (see: <\/span>Colloquial Italian – 1<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and <\/span>Colloquial Italian -2<\/span><\/a>) I choose words that we Italians use all the time in everyday speech, but which are often overlooked in language classes and text books. Here\u00a0then are another three\u00a0words that you will hear a lot in Italy, and which, if you learn to use them properly, will make your spoken Italian sound more natural.<\/span><\/p>\n

Proprio<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0is an emphatic word which has\u00a0the meaning of \u2018really\u2019, \u2018exactly\u2019, or \u2018just\u2019. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n

Questa camicia ti sta proprio<\/span> bene<\/strong> (That shirt really<\/span> suits you)<\/span><\/p>\n

Avevi proprio<\/span> ragione, quel film era veramente noioso<\/strong> (You were exactly<\/span> right, that film was really boring)<\/span><\/p>\n

Leo \u00e8 proprio<\/span> un bravo musicista<\/strong> (Leo is really<\/span> a good musician)<\/span><\/p>\n

Mirella \u00e8 arrivata proprio<\/span> adesso<\/strong> (Mirella has just<\/span> arrived)<\/span><\/p>\n

L<\/span>\u2019incidente \u00e8 sucesso proprio<\/span> cos\u00ec<\/strong> (The accident happened exactly<\/span> like that)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Senz\u2019altro<\/strong>: another emphatic expression meaning \u2018certainly\u2019, \u2018by all means\u2019, \u2018of course\u2019, or \u2018definitely\u2019. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00c8 stato senz\u2019altro<\/span> un esame difficile<\/strong> (It was definitely<\/span> a difficult exam)<\/span><\/p>\n

Marco:<\/em> Posso prendere in prestito questo libro? Giulio:<\/em> S\u00ec, senz\u2019altro!<\/span><\/strong> (Marco:<\/span> <\/em>Can I borrow this book? Giulio:<\/em> Yes, of course!<\/span>)<\/span><\/p>\n

Pietro:<\/em> Vieni con noi stasera in discoteca? Silvia: <\/em>S\u00ec, senz\u2019altro!<\/span><\/strong> (Pietro:<\/em> Are you coming to the disco with us this evening? Silvia:<\/em> Yes, certainly!<\/span>)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Volentieri<\/strong>: means \u2018with pleasure\u2019, or \u2018gladly\u2019. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n

Marco: <\/em>Venite da noi questo finesettimana? Giorgio: <\/em>S\u00ec, volentieri<\/strong> (Marco:<\/em> Are you coming to our house this weekend?\u00a0 Giorgio: <\/em>Yes, with pleasure)<\/span><\/p>\n

Adriano: <\/em>Ti va un buon caff\u00e8? Paolo:<\/em> S\u00ec, volentieri<\/span><\/strong> (Adriano:<\/em> Do you fancy a nice coffee? Paolo:<\/em> Yes, with pleasure<\/span>)<\/span><\/p>\n

Se ti serve una mano ti aiuter\u00f2 volentieri<\/span><\/strong> (If you need a hand I\u2019ll gladly<\/span> help you)<\/span><\/p>\n
