This blog draws inspiration from a rather different source, my accident prone  husband Geoff. Within the last three weeks he has managed to fall from a two  meter wall and crack his ribs, remove a patch of skin from the top a his head  (he is 1 meter 88cm tall so it happens often), and twist his big toe on the  stairs. The toe is now impressively swollen, and\u00a0black and blue,  \u2026..<strong>Pazienza!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018Accidenti, mi sono fatto  proprio male!\u2019<\/strong> (Damn, I\u2019ve really hurt myself!) were not the exact  words that he used when he tripped on the stairs yesterday and remodeled his  toe, but you get the idea. So now we\u2019ll all benefit from Geoff\u2019s  <strong>infortuni<\/strong> (misfortunes) with a look a what\u00a0to say when\u00a0you\u00a0 have an accident (<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018avere un incidente\u2019<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">), but I\u2019m afraid you\u2019ll  have to find your <strong>parolacce<\/strong> (swearwords) elsewhere!<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>Farsi male<\/strong> (to hurt  oneself). <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">Many of the\u00a0expressions we use when  talking about personal accidents are in the reflexive and therefore follow the  normal reflexive rules: <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">For example, you would  say <strong>\u2018mi sono fatt<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">o<\/span> male\u2019<\/strong> if you are male, and\u00a0<strong>\u2018mi sono  fatt<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">a<\/span> male\u2019<\/strong> if you are female. Likewise, if you want to ask someone  else if they have hurt themselves you would say <strong>\u2018ti sei fatt<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">a<\/span> male?\u2019<\/strong> to a female friend and <strong>\u2018ti sei fatt<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">o<\/span> male?\u2019<\/strong> to  a male friend. If you want to use the\u00a0polite, <strong>\u2018lei\u2019<\/strong>, form you  would say <strong>\u2018si \u00e8 fatto(a) male?\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">To explain what part of your body you  have hurt\u00a0use <strong>farsi male <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">a<\/span><\/strong>,  e.g.:\u00a0<strong>\u2018m<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>i sono <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>fatto(a)<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong> male <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">alla<\/span> schiena\u2019<\/strong> (I\u2019ve hurt my back).\u00a0<strong>\u2018mi sono <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>fatto(a)<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong> male  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">al<\/span> gomito\u2019<\/strong> (I\u2019ve hurt my elbow)<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">To tell someone how you hurt  yourself, or in what way you are injured, here are a few useful  phrases:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018Sono\u00a0caduto(a)\u2019<\/strong> (I  fell) or <strong>\u2018ho fatto una caduta\u2019<\/strong> (I had a fall), e.g. <strong>\u2018sono <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>caduto(a)<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong> da quel muro\u2019 <\/strong> (I fell from that wall), <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>&#8216;stamattina ho fatto una brutta caduta da quel muro&#8217; <\/strong>(this morning I had a bad fall from that wall).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018Sono scivolato(a)\u2019<\/strong> (I slipped), e.g.\u00a0<strong>\u2018s<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">ono <\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>scivolato(a)<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong> sul  ghiaccio\u2019<\/strong> (I slipped on the ice).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018Mi sono tagliato(a)  il\u00a0dito\u2019<\/strong> (I\u2019ve cut my finger), n.b. when we talk about parts of the  body, we don\u2019t use the possessive adjective \u2018my\u2019 or \u2018your\u2019.\u00a0Instead we use\u00a0the  definite article\u00a0\u2018the\u2019, e.g. <strong>\u2018mi sono <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>tagliato(a)<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">la<\/span> mano\u2019<\/strong> (I\u2019ve cut my hand, literally: I\u2019ve cut myself the hand),\u00a0<strong>\u2018mi  sono <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>fatto(a)<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong> male <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">alla<\/span> mano\u2019<\/strong> (I\u2019ve hurt my hand, literally: I\u2019ve  hurt myself\u00a0the hand).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018Ho preso una  scossa\u2019<\/strong> (I got an electric\u00a0shock).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018Mi sono bruciato(a) il  braccio\u2019<\/strong> (I\u2019ve burnt my arm). <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018Mi  sono scottato(a) la bocca\u2019<\/strong> (I&#8217;ve scalded my mouth).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>Farsi un livido<\/strong> (to  bruise oneself), e.g. <strong>\u2018Mi sono <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>fatto(a)<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong> un livido sulla gamba\u2019<\/strong> (I\u2019ve bruised my leg).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>Graffiarsi<\/strong> (to  scratch\/graze oneself), e.g. <strong>\u2018Mi sono graffiato(a) il ginocchio\u2019<\/strong> (I\u2019ve grazed my knee).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018Ho battuto la  testa\u2019<\/strong> (I\u2019ve banged my head).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018Ho preso una  storta\u2019<\/strong> (I\u2019ve sprained my ankle).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018\u00c8 molto doloroso\u2019<\/strong> (It\u2019s very painful).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018Mi fa male\u2019<\/strong> (It  hurts),\u00a0<strong>\u2018mi fa male il piede\u2019<\/strong> (my foot hurts).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018Si \u00e8 gonfiato\u2019<\/strong> (It&#8217;s swollen).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>\u2018Ho bisogno di un  cerotto\u2019<\/strong> (I need a plaster), <strong>\u2018<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>Ho bisogno di una benda\u2019<\/strong> (I need a  bandage)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><strong>Sanguinare<\/strong> (to  bleed), <strong>\u2018il dito sta sanguinando\u2019<\/strong> or <strong>\u2018sanguina il  dito\u2019<\/strong> (my finger is bleeding), <strong>\u2018sanguina il naso\u2019<\/strong> (I\u2019ve got a nose bleed).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Andy;font-size: medium\">Va bene, per adesso basta  che\u00a0non voglio pensare pi\u00f9\u00a0a queste cose.\u00a0Pensiamo a qualcosa di bello, ecco,  sta\u00a0uscendo il sole!<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My last blog, Una Veduta dall mia Finestra was inspired by the landscape that I see from my window.
