How trustworthy are our politicians here in Italy? Here is an extract from an interesting article that I found in the Corriere della Sera<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Chi \u00e8 il capo dei Pinocchi? Silvio Berlusconi. Sua \u00e8 la bugia pi\u00f9 clamorosa del 2012, quando ha indicato l\u2019Italia come il paese dall\u2019economia pi\u00f9 solida al mondo, secondo solo alla Germania. \u00c8 lui in testa alla classifica ricavata da <\/strong>Pagella Politica<\/font><\/a><\/strong>, sito di fact-checking che verifica  le dichiarazioni dei protagonisti della scena politica italiana. Frasi poi valutate con una griglia di voti eloquenti: dal netto \u201cvero\u201d al disarmato \u201cPanzana pazzesca\u201d. \u201cPanzana\u201d, ricorda il Vocabolario Treccani, \u00e8 una bugia. Sinonimi: \u201cballa\u201d, \u201cbufala\u201d, \u201cfandonia\u201d, \u201cciancia\u201d, \u201cfanfaluca\u201d, \u201cfola\u201d, \u201cfrottola\u201d, \u201cpalla\u201d. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Who is the leader of the Pinocchios? Silvio Berlusconi. The lie that  he told, when he named Italy as the country with the most stable economy in the world, second only to Germany, is the most ridiculous of 2012. He is at the top of the list put together by Pagella Politica<\/font><\/a>, a fact-checking web site that verifies the statements of the leading figures from the Italian political scene. These statements are then graded on an \u2018eloquent\u2019 scale of scores: from the clean \u2018true\u2019 to the disarming \u2018crazy lie\u2019. \u2018Panzana\u2019, as the Treccani Vocabulary tells us, means \u2018lie\u2019. Other synonyms are: \u2018balla\u2019, \u2018bufala\u2019, \u2018fandonia\u2019, \u2018ciancia\u2019, \u2018fanfaluca\u2019, \u2018fola\u2019, \u2018frottola\u2019, \u2018palla\u2019.<\/p>\n

La panzana pazzesca di Berlusconi, che ha ottenuto il 66% dei voti nel sondaggio di Pagella Politica, fu: \u201cPer quanto riguarda il nostro debito non \u00e8 cos\u00ec elevato come si vuole far credere. L\u2019Italia ha un attivo di 6600 miliardi, \u00e8 la seconda economia pi\u00f9 solida dopo la Germania".<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Berlusconi\u2019s panzana pazzesca <\/em>(crazy lie), which obtained a score of 66% in the survey of Pagella Politica, was: \u201cRegarding our (national) debt, it\u2019s not as high as they would have you believe. Italy has a credit of 6600 billion (Euros), it\u2019s the second most stable economy after Germany\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

After Berlusconi comes Beppe Grillo, leader of the Movimento 5 stelle<\/strong> (5 stars Movement), with the following lie: \u201cIt\u2019s useless reinvigorating the Ilva steel industry, the biggest steel foundries are closing down\u201d.<\/em> False, because in 2011 Italy recovered from the falling production of 2009, even going beyond the levels of the Nineties. It\u2019s the second biggest European producer (of steel) after Germany.<\/p>\n

Pagella Politica non giudica il politico, verifica le dichiarazioni, privilegiando quelle pi\u00f9 esposte mediaticamente. Il sito, nato nell\u2019ottobre 2012, \u00e8 curato da un gruppo di giovani ricercatori e studiosi italiani sparsi per l\u2019Italia e il mondo. Si ispirano al blog americano PolitiFact, che dal 2009 incorona la bugia dell\u2019anno. Si verificano i fatti e dati citati, non le opinioni, n\u00e9 i politici. Consultando Pagella politica, per\u00f2, si pu\u00f2 agevolmente ricavare una graduatoria dei Pinocchi della politica, sulla base di quante dichiarazioni sono semplicemente vere e quante clamorosamente false (tralasciando le valutazioni intermedie). <\/strong><\/p>\n

Pagella Politica doesn\u2019t judge the politicians, it verifies their statements, prioritising those most publicized by the media. The site, created in October 2012, is run by a young group of Italian researchers and scholars, spread throughout Italy and the rest of the world. They draw inspiration from the American blog PolitiFact which since 2009 has crowned the lie of the year. The facts and data cited are verified, not the opinions and the politicians. By consulting Pagella Politica, however, you can easily obtain a graded list of the Pinocchios of politics based on how many statements are simply true and how many are sensationally false (leaving out the intermediary values).<\/p>\n

Berlusconi, di cui sono state verificate 21 affermazioni, guida il \u201cpartito dei Pinocchi\u201d con un terzo di panzane pazzesche (7) e solo una su dieci vera (2). Segue Grillo, verificato 24 volte, con 4 frasi vere e 7 panzane (una su tre \u00e8 una balla).  L\u2019anti-Pinocchio \u00e8 il Primo Ministro Monti, con 14 frasi vere su 17 verificate e zero panzane. Come zero sono le panzane di Bersani, segretario del Pd, a fronte di sole 12 pienamente vere su 21 verificate.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Berlusconi, who has had 21 of his statements checked out, leads the \u201cparty of the Pinocchios\u201d, with a third of his statements being \u2018crazy lies\u2019 and only one in ten being true. Then comes Grillo, who was checked 24 times, with 4 true statements and 7 lies (one in three was a lie). The anti-Pinocchio is Prime Minister Monti, with 14 out of 17 verified statements being true and zero lies. Also with zero lies is Bersani, secretary of the Partito Democratico, but with only 12 out of 21 statements verified being fully true.<\/p>\n
