So, you’re traveling in Italy and you\u2019ve got a problem with la tua macchina<\/strong> but your car vocabulary consists of la macchina<\/strong> (the car), le ruote<\/strong> (the wheels) and lo sterzo<\/strong> (the steering wheel). How do you go about telling the mechanic that there\u2019s a strange noise coming from the left rear passenger seat, that your door handle is loose, or that the clutch isn\u2019t working properly?<\/font><\/p>\n

Well that\u2019s where Geoff\u2019s Mega <\/font>Car<\/font> Vocabulary<\/font><\/strong><\/font> comes in handy!<\/font><\/p>\n

Okay, let\u2019s start with the basics:<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n

The body of the car is called la carrozzeria<\/strong>, and we use the same word for the mechanics body shop<\/font><\/p>\n

Le ruote<\/strong> (the wheels) are fitted with gli pneumatici<\/strong>, commonly called le gomme<\/strong> (the tyres). <\/font><\/p>\n

Le ruote<\/strong> are, hopefully, attached to le assi<\/strong> (the axels), which in turn are attached to il telaio<\/strong> (the chassis, or frame)<\/font><\/p>\n

Sotto il cofano c\u2019\u00e8 il motore<\/strong> (under the hood\/bonnet is the motor) which is fed with carburante<\/strong> (fuel) from il serbatoio<\/strong> (the fuel tank) and emits exhaust through il tubo di scappamento<\/strong>, or tubo di scarico<\/strong> (exhaust pipe)<\/font><\/p>\n

Il bagagliaio<\/strong> (the boot\/trunk) gives you a bit of extra space to load you baggage, shopping, parents in law, and so on.<\/font><\/p>\n

Now let\u2019s open la portiera\/lo sportello<\/strong> (the car door \u2013 we use both words<\/em>), and salire in macchina<\/strong> (get into the car).<\/font><\/p>\n

I always start by allacciando la cintura di sicurezza<\/strong> (putting my seat belt on), then I put la chiave<\/strong> (the key) in l\u2019accensione<\/strong> (the ignition) to mettere in moto la macchina<\/strong> (start the car).<\/font><\/p>\n

I use the la leva del cambio<\/strong> (the gear stick\/shift) to ingranare la marcia<\/strong> (put it into gear), and release the freno a mano<\/strong> (handbrake). Then I use l\u2019acceleratore<\/strong> (the accelerator) and la frizione<\/strong> (the clutch) to move off, and lo sterzo<\/strong>, also known as il volante<\/strong> (the steering wheel) to follow the road.<\/font><\/p>\n
