L\u2019 interessantissima citt\u00e0 di Genova \u2026<\/strong> <\/font><\/p>\n

Mercoled\u00ec scorso siamo andati a Genova per la prima volta. L\u2019interessantissima citt\u00e0 di Genova si trova nel punto centrale della Liguria, fra le due famose riviere di Levante (ad est) e di Ponente (ad ovest). Genova \u00e8 schiacciata fra le montagne che la dividono dal Piemonte e il mar Ligure, e quindi si estende principalmente in senso orizzontale, e nel corso dei secoli ha fagocitato numerosi paesi e citt\u00e0 minori come Pegli, Nervi, Voltri, ecc.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last Wednesday we went to Genova for the first time. The very interesting city of Genova is located in the centre of Liguria between two famous rivieras<\/font><\/a>,<\/font> the Levante (to the east) and the Ponente (to the west). Genova is squashed between the mountains that divide it from Piemonte and the Ligurian sea, and for this reason it\u2019s stretched out horizontally, and during the course of the centuries it has swallowed up numerous villages and minor towns such as Pegli, Nervi, Voltri, and so on.<\/p>\n

\u2026 un primo assaggio della grande variet\u00e0 storico-architettonica<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n

Arrivando con la macchina, quando si lascia l\u2019autostrada per andare nel centro storico, si percorre una lunga sopraelevata che, bench\u00e9 ovviamente sia come una brutta cicatrice sulla citt\u00e0, allo stesso tempo permette al visitatore di avere un primo assaggio della grande variet\u00e0 storico-architettonica che contraddistingue Genova, e dei due panorami contrastanti: da un lato le montagne e dall\u2019altro il mare.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Arriving by car, when you leave the motorway\/freeway to go into the old city centre you follow a long flyover which, even though it\u2019s obviously an ugly scar through the city, affords visitors a \u2018first taste\u2019 of the huge historical and architectural variety which makes Genova so outstanding, and of the two contrasting panoramas: on one side the mountains and on the other the sea.<\/p>\n

Abbiamo lasciato la macchina in un parcheggio sotterraneo che sembrava una scena post apocalittica tratta da Terminator. Parcheggiare \u00e8 stata la nostra prima vera avventura: una corsia stretta stretta a doppio senso di marcia ci ha portato gi\u00f9 nel buio labirinto fino a delle fortuite piazzole di sosta, che per entrarci richiedevano l\u2019esperta capacit\u00e0 di manovra di un autista di camion. Poi mentre ci avviavamo verso l\u2019uscita abbiamo visto un cartello che diceva: \u201cLasciare le chiavi nella vettura\u201d! Non fidandoci troppo, abbiamo deciso di lasciarle invece col custode nel gabbiotto, il quale ci ha spiegato che le chiavi gli servivano nel caso in cui qualcuno restasse bloccato e lui doveva spostare le macchine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We left the car in an underground car park that resembled a post apocalyptic film set from Terminator. Parking was our first real adventure: a very very narrow two way lane carried us down into the dark labyrinth to some rather random parking spaces that required the expert manoeuvring skills of a truck driver to get into. Then when we set off for the exit we saw signs which read: \u201cLeave Your Keys in the Car\u201d<\/em>! Not being very trusting, we decided to leave them instead with the attendant at the pay booth, who explained that the keys were needed in case people got blocked in and he had to move other cars around!<\/p>\n

Pochi gradini ci hanno portato subito in centro. Genova ha una storia marinara antichissima ed \u00e8 sempre stata uno dei pi\u00f9 importanti porti del Mediterraneo. Inoltre \u00e8 famosa per aver dato i natali all\u2019esploratore Cristoforo Colombo, ed \u00e8 possibile visitare la sua casa restaurata nel centro storico. L\u2019eredit\u00e0 marinara di Genova \u00e8 ben rappresentata dalla sua variegata architettura: edifici medievali accanto ad edifici rinascimentali, e poi viali e piazze  imponenti costruiti all\u2019inizio del XX secolo. E naturalmente non mancano esempi di architettura moderna, infatti uno dei maggiori architetti viventi, Renzo Piano (per ex. Aurora Place a Sydney, The Shard a Londra, ecc.) \u00e8 originario di Genova. Antistanti il Porto Vecchio ci sono dei portici che ospitano un mercato al coperto dove sembra di essere in un suq arabo! Per cui passeggiare per Genova \u00e8 una continua sorpresa. <\/strong><\/p>\n

A few steps took us straight into the centre.  Genova has a very old seafaring tradition, and has always been one of the most important Mediterranean ports. It\u2019s also famous as the birthplace of explorer Cristoforo Colombo (Christopher Columbus), and it\u2019s possible to visit his restored house in the city centre. Genova\u2019s maritime heritage is well illustrated by its wide variety of architectural styles: medieval buildings alongside those from the renaissance, and imposing avenues and squares constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. Naturally, there\u2019s no lack of modern architecture, in fact one of the most important architects alive today, Renzo Piano (e.g. Aurora Place in Sydney, The Shard in London) is originally from Genova. In front of the Old Port there are some porticos which host a covered market where you feel like you\u2019re in an Arabic Souk! Therefore, walking around Genova is a continual surprise.<\/p>\n

Ma la cosa che ci ha sorpreso di pi\u00f9 in modo positivo \u00e8 stato il senso di tranquillit\u00e0 e la mancanza di aggressivit\u00e0 che normalmente si associa con le grandi citt\u00e0. La gente era subito pronta a chiacchierare, a dare direzioni, persino a guidarci fino a dove volevamo andare. Come prima impressione Genova ci \u00e8 piaciuta molto e ci torneremo senz\u2019altro per scoprirla meglio.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But the thing that most surprised us in a positive way the feeling of tranquillity, and the lack of aggression that one associates with big cities. People were very willing to chat, and to give direction even to the point of leading us where we wanted to go. Our first impression of Genova was that we like it  lot, and we\u2019ll certainly go back to get to know it better.<\/p>\n
