We\u2019re having a really rainy spring this year: Madonna come viene gi\u00f9!<\/strong> So when I heard the song Piove<\/strong> by Jovanotti in \u2018The Sopranos\u2019, one of our favourite TV series, I immediately thought \u2018BLOG!\u2019 It wasn\u2019t until I listened to the song properly later on, and read the lyrics, that I realised that it was a love song. I also realised that it had a few interesting grammatical points that would benefit from an explanation.<\/p>\n

So, here\u2019s the song, with my translation. Click on the photo below to listen to it whilst you\u2019re reading the lyrics. You\u2019ll see that I\u2019ve highlighted some words and phrases, for which I\u2019ve given explanations at the end of the blog.<\/p>\n

The ground sometimes has to be watered with tears
But then you’ll see that the rain will return<\/font><\/p>\n

Explanation of highlighted words\/phrases:<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

Madonna <\/font>= commonly used as an exclamation, like \u201cmamma mia\u201d<\/strong>, or \u201ccaspita!\u201d<\/strong> (wow!) <\/font><\/p>\n

non pioveva pi\u00f9 = in colloquial Italian the imperfect tense is often used instead of the past conditional, which in this case would have been \u201cche non avrebbe piovuto pi\u00f9\u201d <\/strong>(that it wouldn’t rain any more)<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

fin quando la terra non sar\u00e0<\/font> = \u201cnon\u201d<\/strong> in this case is a false negative (known as the pleonastic non<\/strong>), as is, therefore, not translated. For further explanation see this blog<\/font><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

farci festa = \u201cfare festa\u201d<\/strong> means \u201cto celebrate\u201d, hence \u201cfarci festa\u201d<\/strong> means \u201cto make us celebrate\u201d<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

Senti le gocce battere sulla tua testa <\/font>= \u201csentire\u201d<\/strong> means \u201cto sense\u201d, and is used for the following senses: \u201cto listen, to taste, to feel, to smell, to touch\u201d. The meaning should be clear from the context in which it is used, e.g. senti quel profumo<\/strong> (smell that perfume), senti che chiasso<\/strong> (listen to that racket), senti questa stoffa<\/strong> (feel this cloth), etc.<\/font><\/p>\n

Si eran seccate<\/font> = when talking about plants we use \u201csecco\u201d<\/strong> (dry) and \u201cseccare\u201d<\/strong> (to dry) to mean \u201cmorto\u201d<\/strong> (dead) or \u201cmorire\u201d<\/strong> (to die), e.g. \u201cquell\u2019albero \u00e8 secco\u201d<\/strong> (that tree is dead)<\/p>\n

con il pianto <\/font>= \u201cil pianto\u201d<\/strong> comes from the verb \u201cpiangere\u201d<\/strong> (to cry), and should not be confused with \u201cla<\/strong> pianta\u201d<\/strong> (plant)<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
