La settimana scorsa il tempo ci ha dato un paio di giorni di tregua (questa \u00e8 la pi\u00f9 piovosa e fredda primavera degli ultimi trent\u2019anni!<\/font><\/strong>) e cos\u00ec siamo riusciti a fare un po\u2019 di lavoro sul nostro povero orto. Prima di tutto abbiamo vangato, diserbato e ridisegnato un paio di aiuole. Poi siamo andati a prendere il letame, non quello preconfezionato che si compra all\u2019azienda agraria, ma vero letame fresco. Una famiglia qui del paese ha un paio di cavalli e qualche pecora, per cui gli abbiamo chiesto se potevamo avere un po\u2019 di letame, e cos\u00ec gioved\u00ec mattina, visto che non pioveva, ci siamo messi i vestiti da fatica, abbiamo caricato in macchina dei sacchi vuoti di plastica da 15 kg, il badile, i guanti da lavoro e ci siamo recati a spalare il letame.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

Last week the weather gave us a couple of days truce (this has been the coldest and wettest Spring for thirty years!)<\/font>, so we were able to do a bit of work on our poor vegetable garden. First of all we dug, got rid of the weeds and redesigned a couple of vegetable beds. Then we went to get the manure, not the pre-packed variety that you buy from the gardening centre, but real fresh manure. A family here in our village have a couple of horses and a few sheep, so we asked them if we could have a bit of their manure, and so on Thursday morning, seeing that it wasn\u2019t raining, we put on our work clothes, loaded the car with empty 15kg plastic bags, the shovel, our work gloves, and off  we set to shovel manure. <\/font><\/p>\n

Quando siamo arrivati sul posto abbiamo visto che vicino al mucchio di letame c\u2019erano le pecore con gli agnellini guardati dal fidatissimo cane pastore maremmano. Il pastore maremmano, un bellissimo animale bianco di taglia grossa, \u00e8 un cane usato per proteggere il gregge da altri animali predatori, compreso il lupo, e passa tutto il suo tempo con le pecore, giorno e notte. Siccome io ho paura dei cani, non ero molto contenta di dover lavorare a pochi metri da questa bestia, anche se molto bella. Comunque \u00e8 andato tutto bene: il gregge si \u00e8 subito allontanato e il pastore maremmano \u00e8 rimasto ad abbaiarci mantenendosi ad una distanza di cinque metri, fin quando non ha capito che non ci interessava rubare le sue pecore.<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

When we arrived we saw that near the heap of manure were the sheep with their lambs, guarded by their very faithful Maremmano sheep dog. The Maremmano, a beautiful large white dog, is used to protect the flock from other predatory animals, including the wolf, and spends all his time, day and night, living with the sheep. As I\u2019m afraid of dogs, I wasn\u2019t very happy to have to work just a few paces away from that beast, even if it was really beautiful. However, all went well: the flock immediately moved off, and the dog stayed there barking at us from about five meters away, until he understood that we weren\u2019t interested in stealing his sheep.<\/font><\/p>\n

Riempiti sei sacchi di letame, li abbiamo caricati in macchina e siamo tornati in paese. Il problema \u00e8 che la strada che attraversa il paese \u00e8 molto stretta e le macchine non ci passano, per cui bisogna parcheggiare fuori dal paese e portare tutto a mano o con la carriola. Ma gioved\u00ec siamo stati fortunati: mentre scaricavamo la macchina \u00e8 passato Giorgione con la sua Ape 50, l\u2019unico mezzo motorizzato che riesce a passare per la stradina, e ci ha fatto caricare i sacchi di letame sulla sua Ape per poi portarceli su fino a casa. <\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n

Once the sacks were full of muck, we loaded them in the car and came back to our village. The problem is that the street that runs through our village is too narrow for cars to pass, so you have to park outside the village and carry everything up to the house by hand or with the wheelbarrow. But on Thursday we had a bit of luck: whilst we were unloading the car Giorgione (Big George) came along with his Ape 50, the only motor vehicle that can get along the little street, and let us load the bags on the back of his Ape so that he could take them up to our house for us.<\/font><\/p>\n

So, the muck\u2019s dug in, the vegetables planted, now all we need is a bit of sun \u2026 please!<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n
