The rugged <strong>sentiero<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #646b86\">(footpath)<\/span> mimics their contortions as it snakes its steep way up past monumental blocks, pried from the cliff faces to our left by winters icy claws and cast down into the natural <strong>anfiteatro<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #646b86\">(amphitheatre)<\/span> which encloses <strong>I Lagoni<\/strong>. We come out of the <strong>bosco<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #646b86\">(woods)<\/span> onto a flat <strong>promontorio<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #646b86\">(promontory)<\/span>, several hundred meters below us glistens the deep steel blue of two long slivers of water.<\/p>\n<table width=\"535\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"2\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"535\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/100_6139.jpg\" aria-label=\"100 6139 Thumb\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"100_6139\" alt=\"100_6139\"  width=\"535\" height=\"406\" border=\"0\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/100_6139_thumb.jpg\"><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"535\"><em><span style=\"color: #646b86\"><strong>The frozen \u2018dancers\u2019 (beech trees)<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p align=\"justify\">Now we\u2019re back in amongst the frozen dancer trees again, continuing or climb towards the mysteriously named <strong>Lago Scuro<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #646b86\">(Dark Lake)<\/span>. We reach a <strong>bivio<\/strong><span style=\"color: #646b86\"> (junction)<\/span> and take the right hand trail. Mercifully, the climb becomes less steep until finally we reach a plateau tucked in against the almost sheer 200 meter wall of the <strong>crinale<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #646b86\">(ridge)<\/span>. We decide to leave that challenge for another day, and continue our way westwards, passing through a series of <strong>paludi<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #646b86\">(marshes)<\/span> and across a refreshing <strong>ruscello<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #646b86\">(stream)<\/span> towards <strong>Capanne di Lago Scuro<\/strong>. These restored huts house a laboratory which is used by the University of Parma to study the fragile wetland ecosystem of the surrounding area.<\/p>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n<table width=\"535\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"2\" align=\"left\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"535\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/100_6157.jpg\" aria-label=\"100 6157 Thumb\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border-width: 0px\" title=\"100_6157\" alt=\"100_6157\"  width=\"535\" height=\"406\" border=\"0\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/100_6157_thumb.jpg\"><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"535\"><span style=\"color: #646b86\"><strong><em>One of the \u2018monumental blocks\u2019. This one seemed to have a huge door which has been left slightly accostata (ajar), perhaps an entrance to the underworld?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">\n<p align=\"justify\">We find a rocky knoll overlooking the <strong>capanne <\/strong><span style=\"color: #646b86\">(huts)<\/span>, and hungrily break out our<strong> pranzo al sacco: panini con ricotta al forno e pomodoro, acqua fresca, e per dolce, una mela ciascuno <\/strong><span style=\"color: #646b86\">(packed lunch: sandwiches with oven baked ricotta and tomato, fresh water, and for desert, an apple each)<\/span>. We\u2019d expected to have found <strong>Lago Scuro<\/strong> by now, and were seriously beginning to doubt its existence, especially when I asked a couple of walkers who appeared from the opposite direction: <strong>\u201cscusate, ma di l\u00e0 c\u2019\u00e8 il Lago Scuro?\u201d<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #646b86\">(\u201cexcuse me, but is Lago Scuro in that direction?\u201d)<\/span>, and they replied<strong> \u201cnon abbiamo visto nessun lago!\u201d<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #646b86\">(\u201cWe haven\u2019t seen any lakes!\u201d)<\/span>. Perhaps, I suggested to Serena, it\u2019s just a name given to the marshy area that we passed through, or perhaps it only exists in the rainy season?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Refreshed by our <strong>pranzo<\/strong>, and with considerably lighter <strong>zaini<\/strong><span style=\"color: #646b86\"> (rucksacks)<\/span>, we begin the trek back down to where we\u2019ve left the car, and to our surprise, after only a couple of hundred meters, \u2026 another <strong>bivio<\/strong> with a sign pointing off to the left indicating <strong>\u2018Lago Scuro\u2019<\/strong>. Another one hundred and fifty meters and we find ourselves besides a <strong>specchio d\u2019acqua<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #646b86\">(mirror of water)<\/span> cupped in a small bowl beneath imposing cliffs and peaks. Every few second, the almost total stillness is broken by the \u2018plop\u2019 of a fish rising rapidly to the surface to gulp down some unsuspecting insect.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">We sit for a few moments beside the shore, and I feel an overwhelming desire to find a large flat surface on which to stretch myself out and close my eyes. As there are no such convenient surfaces in sight I content myself with sitting on a small rock and contemplating the ripples left on the surface by the hungry fish. It\u2019s only as we\u2019re getting up to leave that I notice a curious slab of stone to my right which seems to have some letter like incisions on its surface. Together, Serena and I study the ancient looking graffiti until we begin to make out fragments of words. We run our fingers over the lichen encrusted surface to try and trace the form of the less defined letters.
