A few days ago I wrote a post about the use of the different forms of the formal personal pronoun: lei, le<\/strong> and la<\/strong><\/font>. Today I\u2019m going to give you a few sentences that are missing the personal pronoun. All you have to do is fill the gaps with the correct form (click <\/em>HERE<\/em><\/font><\/strong><\/a> if you need to revise them first)<\/em><\/font>.<\/font> Where appropriate, I\u2019ll clarify whether the Italian verb is followed by a direct or indirect object (in brackets)<\/font><\/em><\/strong>, as English and Italian don\u2019t always correspond. N.B. Don\u2019t forget that we normally use le<\/strong> instead of the longer version a lei<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s an example: Signor Rossi, devo parlar...<\/font> in privato (parlare a qualcuno, indirect object)<\/font><\/em> <\/strong>= Signor Rossi, devo parlarle<\/font> in privato<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Buon giorno Dottor Bianchi, \u2026 avevo telefonato ieri mattina per fissare un appuntamento, si ricorda? (telefonare a qualcuno, indirect object)<\/font><\/em><\/strong> = Good morning Doctor Bianchi, I phoned you yesterday morning to make an appointment, do you remember?<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Noi pensavamo di andare al ristorante. \u2026 \u00e8 d\u2019accordo, Signora?<\/strong> = We were thinking of going to the restaurant. Is that that all right with you, Madam?<\/p>\n

3. Mi ha fatto molto piacere conoscer\u2026, Signor Rossi. A presto! (conoscere qualcuno, direct object)<\/font><\/em><\/strong> = It was a pleasure to meet you, Mr Rossi. See you soon!<\/p>\n

4. Passo da \u2026 dopo il lavoro, va bene? (passare da qualcuno, indirect object)<\/font><\/em> <\/strong>= I\u2019ll come by to see you after work, is that all right?<\/p>\n

5. Signora Giorgi, il libro che aveva ordinato \u00e8 arrivato. Passa a ritirarlo \u2026 o glielo<\/font> devo portare io?<\/strong> = Mrs Giorgi, the book you ordered has arrived. Will you come to collect it yourself or shall I bring it to you?<\/p>\n

6. Ah! \u00c8 stato in Inghilterra! \u2026 \u00e8 piaciuta? (piacere a qualcuno, indirect object)<\/font><\/em> <\/strong>= Ah! You\u2019ve been to England! Did you like it?<\/p>\n

7. Mi congratulo con \u2026 per la sua promozione, Ingegnere! (congratularsi con qualcuno, indirect object)<\/font><\/em><\/strong> = My congratulations for your promotion, Engineer!<\/p>\n

8. Complimenti, Signora, \u2026 trovo bene. Queste vacanze \u2026 hanno fatto proprio bene! (trovare qualcuno, direct object; fare bene a qualcuno, indirect object)<\/em><\/font> <\/strong>= My compliments, Madam, you look well. These holidays have really done you good!<\/p>\n

9. Ben arrivato, Signor Bianchi! \u2026 stavamo aspettando per cominciare la riunione (aspettare qualcuno, direct object)<\/font><\/em><\/strong> = Welcome, Mr Bianchi! We were waiting for you before starting the meeting<\/p>\n

10. C\u2019\u00e8 una lettera per \u2026, Signora Bruni. Vuole che gliela<\/font> metta da parte<\/strong>? = There\u2019s a letter for you, Mrs Bruni. Would you like me to put it aside for you?<\/p>\n
