Fidarsi<\/strong> – ‘to trust’, is an intransitive reflexive verb, in other words a reflexive verb that is followed by a preposition.<\/font><\/p>\n

When we want to say that we trust someone or something we use the preposition ‘di’<\/strong>, hence ‘fidarsi di qualcuno\/qualcosa’.<\/strong> Here are some examples of how to use it:<\/font><\/p>\n

mi fido di te<\/strong> – I trust you<\/font><\/p>\n

la gente non si fida dei politici<\/strong> – people don’t trust the politicians<\/font><\/p>\n

vi fidate di quella vecchia macchina?<\/strong> – do you (plural) trust that old car?<\/font><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Present perfect:<\/em><\/font><\/p>\n

non mi sono mai fidato di lui<\/strong> – I never trusted him<\/font><\/p>\n

Lucia si \u00e8 fidata di zia Rosa e le ha confidato tutto<\/strong> – Lucia trusted aunt Rosa and confided everything to her<\/font><\/p>\n

ci siamo fidati del nostro istinto<\/strong> – we trusted our instincts<\/font><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table><\/div>\n

When we want to say that we trust that someone will do something, or that something will happen we use the preposition ‘che’<\/strong>. N.B. the verb following ‘che’<\/strong> uses the subjunctive form (highlighted in red):<\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

<\/em>la gente non si fida che i politici siano<\/font> onesti<\/strong> – people don’t trust politicians to be honest <\/p>\n

vi fidate che quella vecchia macchina vi porti<\/font> fino a Roma?<\/strong> – do you trust that old car to get you to Rome?<\/font><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Present Perfect: <\/p>\n

<\/em>Lucia si \u00e8 fidata che la zia Rosa tenesse<\/font> segreto quello che le aveva confidato<\/strong> – Lucia trusted that aunt Rosa would keep secret that which she confided in her <\/p>\n

non mi sono mai fidato che lui fosse<\/font> una persona per bene<\/strong> – I never trusted that he was an honest person<\/font><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

When we want to say to ‘trust oneself\/himself\/ourselves’ etc. with the meaning of ‘to feel up to something’, or ‘to be able to do something’, we use either the preposition ‘di’<\/strong> or ‘a’<\/strong>:<\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Lucia si \u00e8 fidata di\/a raccontare il suo segreto a zia Rosa<\/strong> – Lucia felt able to tell her secret to aunt Rosa<\/font> <\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

To say that someone or something is trustworthy we use ‘affidabile’<\/strong> (singular) or ‘affidabili’<\/strong> (plural):<\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La zia Rosa \u00e8 una persona affidabile<\/strong> – Aunt Rosa is a trustworthy person <\/p>\n

la macchina \u00e8 vecchia ma affidabile<\/strong> – the car is old but trustworthy <\/p>\n
