Il telefono<\/strong>, for some a lifeline, for others a necessary evil. It’s good to be in touch, but sometimes ‘ti viene la voglia di buttarlo dalla finestra!’ <\/strong>(you feel like throwing it out of the window!) Here is a bit of useful telephone vocabulary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice that telefonare<\/strong> (to phone) is followed by the preposition a<\/strong>, and chiamare <\/strong>(to call) is followed by the direct object, e.g.:<\/p>\n

Giorgio: <\/em>Hai telefonato a Marco<\/span>? <\/strong>Lucia: <\/em>S\u00ec, gli<\/span> ho telefonato <\/strong>(Giorgio: <\/em>Have you phoned Marco? Lucia: <\/em>Yes, I’ve phoned him);<\/p>\n

Giorgio: <\/em>Hai telefonato a tua madre<\/span>? <\/strong>Lucia: <\/em>S\u00ec, le<\/span> ho telefonato <\/strong>(Giorgio: <\/em>have you phoned your mother? Lucia: <\/em>Yes, I’ve phoned her).<\/p>\n

Giorgio: <\/em>Hai chiamato Marco<\/span>? <\/strong>Lucia: <\/em>S\u00ec, l’<\/span>ho chiamato <\/strong>(Giorgio: <\/em>Have you called Marco? Lucia: <\/em>Yes, I’ve called him).<\/p>\n

Giorgio: Hai chiamato tua madre<\/span>? <\/strong>Lucia: S\u00ec, l’<\/span>ho chiamata <\/strong>(Giorgio: Have you called your mother? Lucia: <\/em>Yes, I’ve called her).<\/p>\n
