No, it\u2019s not another song translation<\/font><\/strong><\/a>, simply a little blog inspired by our old FIAT Punto. Anyone who has ever owned a Punto, Panda, Uno etc. will know that, whilst generally reliable, they tend to develop their own individual voice which is composed of a range of unidentifiable squeaks, creaks, rattles, and so on. We long ago gave up on stuffing pieces of card into potential rattle gaps, banging on suspicious panels, and twiddling switches and screws in the vain hope of a quiet journey. We\u2019ve learned to live with the little symphony of chattering that she (the Punto) chants to us as we drive along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

But one thing continues to frustrate me like mad: the lack of an Italian noun for rattle, as in the noise made by your typical old FIAT Punto. Now, if I\u2019m in a car with English speakers and I hear a rattling noise I simply say \u201ccan you hear that rattling noise?\u201d. Not so with a car containing Italian passengers. I\u2019m reduced to saying \u201csenti quel rumore che fa trak trak trak\/clak clak clak etc?\u201d<\/strong> and embarrassing myself by producing a plethora of silly noises in the hope of drawing attention to that very annoying rattle. In fact in English I could even say \u2018metallic rattling noise\u2019, \u2018plastic rattling noise\u2019, and so on. It\u2019s no good, from now on I\u2019m only allowing English speakers in my Punto!<\/p>\n

Seriously though, the word rattle does have a surprising number of interpretations in Italian, even if none of them are the one that I actually need. Let\u2019s have a look.<\/p>\n

Rattle:<\/p>\n

1. sferragliare<\/strong> (verb: to make a rattling noise) la vecchia macchina sferragliava lungo la strada<\/strong> (the old car rattled along the road). The root of this verb is obviously ferro<\/strong> (iron), which leads to ferraglia<\/strong> (scrap metal). However, sferragliare<\/strong> only describes the noise of scrap metal being moved about, so you can\u2019t ask \u201csenti quella sferraglia?\u201d<\/strong> because it doesn\u2019t make sense.<\/p>\n

2. far sbatacchiare<\/strong> (to shake and make a rattling noise) il vento faceva sbatacchiare le persiane<\/strong> (the wind rattled the shutters)<\/p>\n

3. il sonaglio<\/strong> (noun: the baby\u2019s rattle) from suonare<\/strong> (to play or make a sound)<\/p>\n

4. innervosire<\/strong> (verb: to emotionally shake), quell\u2019incidente mi ha veramente  innervosito<\/strong> (that accident really rattled me)<\/p>\n

5. il crotalo<\/strong> (noun: the rattlesnake) commonly known as \u2018il serpente a sonagli\u2019<\/strong> (see sonaglio<\/strong> above)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

6. il rantolo<\/strong> (noun: the death rattle)<\/p>\n

7. continuare a chiacchierare<\/strong> (to rattle on, lit: to continue chattering), il prof era cos\u00ec noioso, continuava a chiacchierare per ore<\/strong> (the teacher was really boring, he rattled on for hours), we also have chiacchierare incessantemente di<\/strong> (to rattle on about), Laura chiacchiera incessantemente di Paolo<\/strong> (Laura rattles on about Paulo)<\/p>\n

8. parlare a raffica<\/strong> (to rattle on, lit. to speak in bursts or never shut up), a variant of continuare a chiacchierare<\/strong><\/p>\n

9. ripetere velocemente<\/strong> (to rattle off) il sergente ripeteva velocemente gli ordini del giorno<\/strong> (the sergeant rattled off the orders of the day)<\/p>\n

10. scuotere rumorosamente<\/strong> (to rattle, lit. to shake noisily)<\/p>\n
