It keeps the wind off your face in the car. The correct answer is <strong>il parabrezza <\/strong>(literally \u2018the breeze stopper, the windshield\/windscreen of a car). I<strong>l paravento<\/strong> (lit. the wind stopper) is a wind break, while <strong>il paraspifferi<\/strong> is a draft excluder.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">2. Mrs Rossi is on the telephone and she wants to talk to Maria. How would you say to her, using the polite form, \u2018I\u2019ll pass her to you\u2019? The correct answer is <strong>Gliela passo subito <\/strong>because the personal pronouns <strong>le<\/strong> (= a lei, \u2018to you\u2019 polite)\u00a0 and <strong>la <\/strong>(= her, direct objects) join together\u00a0 becoming the combined pronoun <strong>gliela. <\/strong>The sentence<strong> Te la passo subito <\/strong>is grammatically correct but is used for talking to a friend, while<strong> Le la passo subito <\/strong>is incorrect. Which one of the following sentences would you use to say \u2018Giovanni said he would go to the Dolomites for Christmas\u2019? The correct answer is <strong>Giovanni disse che sarebbe andato sulle Dolomiti per Natale<\/strong>: we use the past conditional to express the idea of <em>\u2018the future in the past\u2019<\/em>, i.e. whereas in English we say \u2018said he would go\u2019, in Italian we use \u2018said he would have gone\u2019.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">4. You go to <strong>il fruttivendolo<\/strong> (the greengrocer) to buy some fruit, but something&#8217;s wrong with your shopping list, can you spot the mistake? <strong>un chilo di mele, mezzo chilo di banane, un chilo di pesce, mezzo chilo di ciliegie<\/strong>. The correct answer is <strong>un chilo di pesce<\/strong> (a kilo of fish, which you\u2019d normally by from <strong>il pescivendolo<\/strong>, the fishmonger). What you probably wanted was <strong>un chilo di pesche<\/strong> (a kilo of peaches). Which is the correct sentence to use if you want to say \u2018When I was a child I wanted to become a doctor\u2019? <strong>Da bambina volevo diventare un dottore \/ Da bambina ho voluto diventare un dottore \/ Da bambina sono voluta diventare un dottore<\/strong>. The correct answer is <strong>Da bambina volevo diventare un dottore<\/strong>. We use the imperfect tense, <strong>volevo<\/strong>, because my wanting to become a doctor lasted over a period of time rather than a specific point in time.
