In the \u2018condizionale\u2019 how to translate in italiano:

Hmm… bella domanda! (good question!)<\/span> I think the answers are worth sharing with everyone because this is an especially tricky subject that sooner or later tends to ‘unhinge’ most students of Italian.<\/span><\/p>\n

So without going into too much detail, believe me you don’t want to go there, here is a simplified summary:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
..I should be\u2026<\/span><\/td>\n(io) dovrei essere,<\/strong> e.g. dovrei essere alla stazione per le dieci <\/strong>(I should be at the station by 10 o’ clock)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
..I should have been\u2026<\/span><\/td>\n(io) <\/span>sarei dovuto essere, <\/strong>this is the most grammatically correct form, however, nowadays it is more common to use<\/span> (io) a<\/span><\/span>vrei dovuto essere,<\/strong>\u00a0 e.g. a<\/span><\/span>vrei dovuto essere<\/strong> <\/span>alla stazione per le dieci<\/strong> (I should have been at the station by 10 o’ clock). <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
..I should have had\u2026<\/span><\/td>\n(io) <\/span><\/span>avrei dovuto avere,<\/strong>\u00a0 e.g. avrei dovuto avere l’appuntamento stamattina<\/strong> (I should have had the appointment this morning). <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
..I could have to\u2026<\/span><\/td>\nThe correct translation would be potrei dover …<\/strong>, but we use other expressions instead, such as: pu\u00f2 darsi che (io) debba, <\/strong>or \u00e8 probabile che (io) debba<\/strong>, e.g. \u00e8 probabile che io debba partire domani <\/strong>(I could have to leave tomorrow)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
..I could have had\u2026<\/span><\/td>\n(io) <\/span><\/span>avrei potuto avere, <\/strong>e.g. avrei potuto avere un altro lavoro <\/strong>(I could have had another job)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
..I could be able to\u2026<\/span><\/td>\n(io) potrei farcela<\/strong>, e.g. potrei farcela<\/strong> <\/span><\/span>a passare da te domani sera <\/strong>(I could be able to pop round to your place tomorrow evening). Another possibility would be to say se ce la faccio, passo da te domani sera<\/strong> (If I can manage it, I’ll pop round tomorrow evening)<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
..I would like..<\/span><\/td>\nmi piacerebbe<\/strong>, e.g. mi piacerebbe andare al mare <\/strong>(I would like to go to the sea)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
..I would have wanted..<\/span><\/td>\n(io) <\/span><\/span>avrei voluto<\/strong>, e.g. avrei voluto andare al mare <\/strong>(I would have wanted to go to the sea – this can also be translated as ‘I would have liked to go to the sea’)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
..I would have to\u2026<\/span><\/td>\n(io) <\/span><\/span>dovrei<\/strong>, e.g. dovrei partire per le otto <\/strong>(I would have to leave by eight o’clock), N.B.. dovrei<\/strong> also means ‘I should’<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
..I would have had\u2026<\/span><\/td>\n(io) <\/span><\/span>avrei avuto<\/strong>, e.g. avrei avuto pi\u00f9 tempo…<\/strong> (I would have had more time…)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
..I would have been\u2026<\/span><\/td>\n(io) <\/span><\/span>sarei stato<\/strong>, e.g. sarei stata pi\u00f9 contenta… <\/strong>(I would have been happier…)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
