{"id":4544,"date":"2014-01-29T14:22:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-29T14:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/?p=4544"},"modified":"2014-01-31T20:14:01","modified_gmt":"2014-01-31T20:14:01","slug":"how-not-to-say-i-love-you-in-italian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/how-not-to-say-i-love-you-in-italian\/","title":{"rendered":"How Not to Say I Love You in Italian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\">Italians are very romantic, and town walls all over Italy are covered in graffiti with big passionate declarations of love. <strong>Ma amore non fa sempre rima con cuore<\/strong> (but love does not always rhyme with heart), as we say in Italian, so despite the good intentions these romantic graffiti are often full of grammatical mistakes which can make them very comical at times:<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"535\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"535\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/01\/amori-6_thumb1.jpg\" aria-label=\"Amori 6 Thumb Thumb\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;padding-top: 0px\" title=\"amori-6_thumb\" border=\"0\" alt=\"amori-6_thumb\"  width=\"539\" height=\"403\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/01\/amori-6_thumb_thumb.jpg\"><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"535\"><font size=\"3\">such as this very simple one:<strong><font color=\"#4f81bd\" face=\"Comic Sans MS\"> PEDONAMI<\/font><\/strong><\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p align=\"justify\">The writer of the message above forgot an <strong>\u2018r\u2019<\/strong>, so instead of <strong>\u2018perdonami\u2019<\/strong> (forgive me), he\/she wrote <strong>\u2018pedonami\u2019<\/strong> which can be interpreted as \u2018run me over\u2019 (<strong>pedone<\/strong> is a pedestrian or a pawn in chess. The verb <strong>\u2018pedonare\u2019<\/strong> doesn\u2019t actually exist but to me this image conveys the idea of a pedestrian run over by a car).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The next photo is an example of graffiti written using text messaging shorthand, peppered with numerous grammatical errors and spelling mistakes (to find out more about text messaging in Italian click <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/messaggini\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong><font color=\"#0000ff\" size=\"3\">here<\/font><\/strong><\/em><\/a>):<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"535\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"535\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/01\/amori-11.jpg\" aria-label=\"Amori 1 Thumb1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;padding-top: 0px\" title=\"amori 1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"amori 1\"  width=\"535\" height=\"329\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/italian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/01\/amori-1_thumb1.jpg\"><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"535\"><strong><font color=\"#008080\" size=\"3\" face=\"Comic Sans MS\">LA VITA MI A DATO UN REGALO BELLISSIMO E IO COME LO STUPIDO O PERSO E X QUESTO IO CI\u00d2 UN DOLORE ATROCE KE SOLO TU PUOI QUARIRMI XKE 6 PARTE DI ME!<\/font><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p align=\"justify\">Translated into Italian the graffiti should read:<strong> \u201cLa vita mi ha dato un regalo bellissimo e io come uno stupido l\u2019ho perso e per questo io c\u2019ho un dolore atroce che solo tu puoi guarirmi, perch\u00e9 sei parte di me!\u201d <\/strong>(Life gave me a wonderful present and I, like an idiot, lost it, that\u2019s why I have a terrible pain that only you can cure, because you are part of me!)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">A very common mistake in a lot of graffiti is missing out the letter <strong>\u2018h\u2019<\/strong>, which is not pronounced in Italian but is written, e.g. <strong>\u2018o\u2019<\/strong> instead of<strong> \u2018ho\u2019<\/strong> (I have), <strong>\u2018ai\u2019<\/strong> instead of <strong>\u2018hai\u2019<\/strong> (you have), and <strong>\u2018a\u2019<\/strong> instead of<strong> \u2018ha\u2019<\/strong> (he\/she\/it has). But it\u2019s interesting and sad at the same time to notice that these writers still have a vague memory of the existence of a silent <strong>\u2018h\u2019<\/strong> somewhere in their spelling, so this letter sometimes appears in the most unexpected places. Lo (io?) ho sbagliato e continuer\u00f2 a farlo, ma sappi che ti amer\u00f2 <\/strong>(I don\u2019t want to lose you.
