I\u2019m going to tell you a story \u2026 a very old story \u2026 a story about two young lovers called Amore and Psiche \u2026<\/font><\/p>\n

Psiche era bellissima, di una bellezza cos\u00ec rara e sorprendente che nessun uomo si sentiva all\u2019altezza di corteggiarla.<\/font><\/p>\n

Psyche was beautiful, she possessed a beauty so rare and surprising that no man felt worthy to court her.<\/font><\/p>\n

Venere era gelosa e invidiosa della bellezza di questa semplice mortale e, offesa, decise di vendicarsi di Psiche. Decise perci\u00f2 di chiedere aiuto al suo figlio prediletto Amore, meglio conosciuto da tutti come Cupido.<\/font><\/p>\n

Venus was jealous and envied the beauty of this simple mortal and, offended, made up her mind to take revenge on Psyche. She decided, therefore, to ask her favourite son Amore (Love), better known to everyone as Cupid (also known as Eros) to help her.<\/font><\/p>\n

La vendetta ordita da Venere consisteva nel far innamorare Psiche (tramite le infallibili frecce d\u2019amore del figlio) dell\u2019uomo pi\u00f9 brutto e sfortunato della terra affinch\u00e9 vivessero insieme una vita povera e triste, e lei fosse cos\u00ec coperta di vergogna a causa di questa relazione.<\/font><\/p>\n

The vendetta planned by Venus involved making Psyche fall in love (using her son’s infallible arrows of love) with the ugliest and most unfortunate man on earth so that they should live a poor and unhappy life together, and she would be filled with shame by the relationship.<\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Ma il piano di Venere fall\u00ec perch\u00e9 suo figlio Amore, appena vide Psiche, rimase letteralmente incantato della sua bellezza e rapito da quella meravigliosa visione. <\/font><\/p>\n

But Venus’ plan failed because as soon as her son Amore saw Psyche he was literally enchanted by her beauty and stolen away by that wonderful vision.<\/font><\/p>\n

Preso alla sprovvista da questa visione celestiale fece erroneamente cadere la freccia preparata per Psiche sul suo stesso piede, iniziando cos\u00ec ad amarla perdutamente.<\/font><\/p>\n

Taken by surprise by this heavenly vision he accidently dropped the arrow which he had prepared for Psyche on his own foot, and so began to fall hopelessly in love with her.<\/font><\/p>\n

Amore non poteva stare lontano dalla sua amata mortale e cos\u00ec con l\u2019aiuto di Zefiro, che la trasport\u00f2 in volo su un letto di fiori profumati, la bella Psiche fu portata nel meraviglioso palazzo di Amore.<\/font><\/p>\n

Amore couldn’t bear to be away from his mortal love, and so with the help of Zephyr, who flew her on a bed of sweetly smelling flowers, beautiful Psyche was taken to the wonderful palace of Amore.<\/font><\/p>\n

Ogni notte Amore andava dalla sua amata senza mai farsi vedere in volto, e i due vivevano momenti di travolgente passione che mai nessun mortale aveva conosciuto.<\/font><\/p>\n

Every night Amore went to his lover without ever letting her see his face, and the two experienced moments of overwhelming passion that no mortal had ever known.<\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

I loro incontri avvenivano di notte perch\u00e9 Amore voleva nascondersi ed evitare le ire della madre Venere, cos\u00ec aveva detto alla sua amata che lui era il suo sposo ma che lei non doveva chiedere chi fosse e doveva accontentarsi solo del suo amore senza mai vederlo. <\/font><\/p>\n

Their meetings took place at night because Amore wanted to hide himself in order to avoid the wrath of his mother Venus, and so he had told his lover that although he was her husband she should never ask who he was and should content herself with his love without ever seeing him.<\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

Psiche aveva accettato il compromesso ammaliata dalle carezze e dalla passione di Amore e cos\u00ec, giorno per giorno aspettava con ansia che facesse sera per incontrare il suo amato.<\/font><\/p>\n

Psyche had accepted this compromise, spellbound by Amore’s caresses and passion, and so, day by day she eagerly awaited the arrival of evening when she would meet her lover.<\/font><\/p>\n

Un giorno le sorelle di Psiche prese dalla gelosia, la istigarono a scoprire il volto del suo amante, cos\u00ec Psiche la notte stessa decise finalmente di vedere per la prima volta il viso dell\u2019uomo che le travolgeva i sensi. <\/font><\/p>\n

One day, Psyche’s sisters, overcome by jealousy talked her into unmasking her lover’s identity, and so that very evening Psyche decided to finally see  for the first time the face of the man who overwhelmed her senses.<\/font><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Prese una lampada a olio e una spada, per paura che fosse un orribile mostro pronto a farle del male; era disposta a tutto pur di conoscere finalmente Amore.<\/font><\/p>\n

She took an oil lamp, and a sword in case he turned out to be a horrible monster ready to hurt her (as her jealous sisters had told her); she was ready for anything in order to finally know Amore.<\/font><\/p>\n

Quando Amore la raggiunse, Psiche avvicin\u00f2 la lampada al suo viso e rest\u00f2 folgorata dalla bellezza eterea di quel bellissimo uomo dalle gote rosee e dai riccioli biondi che aveva un paio di meravigliose ali dolcemente ripiegate sulle sue spalle. <\/font><\/p>\n

When she reached Amore, Psyche put the lamp close to his face and was transfixed by the ethereal beauty of that handsome man with the rosy cheeks and blond curls who had a pair of wonderful wings gently folded upon his shoulders.<\/font><\/p>\n

Incantata e ancor pi\u00f9 innamorata, Psiche mentre stava per baciarlo fece accidentalmente cadere una goccia d\u2019olio della lampada su Amore. Costui, dopo aver capito quello che era successo, si allontan\u00f2 da lei e scomparve lasciando Psiche nello sconforto pi\u00f9 totale.<\/font><\/p>\n

Enchanted, and even more in love, Psyche moved to kiss him but accidently let fall a drop of oil from the lamp onto Amore who, once he had understood what had happened, pulled away from her and disappeared, leaving Psyche totally devastated.<\/font><\/p>\n

Appena Venere seppe dell\u2019accaduto s\u2019infuri\u00f2 e scaten\u00f2 la sua ira sulla povera Psiche: per punirla la sottopose a diverse e difficili prove che lei super\u00f2 brillantemente. <\/font><\/p>\n

As soon as Venus found out what had happened she became furious and unleashed her rage on poor Psyche, punishing her by making her undertake several difficult deeds, which she brilliantly overcame (this part is very abbreviated, but is worth reading up on).<\/font><\/p>\n

Infine Giove, il padre degli dei, mosso da compassione per le vicissitudini della ragazza fece in modo che i due amanti potessero stare insieme. Psiche ad Amore si sposarono e dalla loro unione nacque un figlio di nome Piacere.<\/font><\/p>\n

Finally Jupiter, father of the Gods, moved by compassion for the girl\u2019s hardships, arranged things so that the two lovers could be together. Psyche and Amore were married and from their union was born a son by the name of Piacere (Pleasure).<\/font><\/p>\n

La leggenda di Amore e Psiche ha un significato allegorico: Amore (che sarebbe Cupido, o secondo la mitologia greca Eros) \u00e8 identificato come il signore dell\u2019amore e del desiderio, e Psiche raffigura l\u2019anima: Amore unendosi misticamente a Psiche le dona l\u2019immortalit\u00e0. Dall\u2019unione dell\u2019anima e dell\u2019amore nasce il piacere.<\/font><\/p>\n

The legend of Amore and Psyche has an allegorical meaning: Amore (who is Cupid or, in Greek Mythology, Eros) is identified as the lord of love and desire, and Psyche represents the soul: Amore, by mystically unifying himself with Psyche, gave her the gift of immortality. From the union of the soul and love comes pleasure.<\/font><\/p>\n
