My name is Ureder and I\u2019m a Spanish teacher who is learning Italian. I follow your blog quite regularly and it has helped me to understand the Italian grammar better.<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

I would appreciate if you could translate the following sentences into Italian. I think in some of these examples the Spanish translation is more similar to the English sentence than the Italian translation. N.B.<\/strong> as I mentioned in part one, in colloquial Italian we often use avrei<\/strong> instead of sarei<\/strong> when speaking in the conditional, e.g.:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
I could have been richer <\/td>\nsarei<\/u> potuta\/o essere pi\u00f9 ricca\/o<\/strong><\/font>
avrei<\/u> potuto essere pi\u00f9 ricca\/o<\/strong><\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
I should have been richer<\/td>\nsarei<\/u> dovuta\/o essere pi\u00f9 ricca\/o<\/strong> 
avrei<\/u> dovuto essere pi\u00f9 ricca\/o<\/strong> <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

You will also notice that because we use essere <\/strong>with ricco<\/strong> i.e. ‘to be rich’, the past participle changes gender and number accordingly e.g.:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I should have been richer (feminine)
I should have been richer (masculine)
we should have been richer (masculine plural)<\/td>\n		sarei dovuta<\/u> essere pi\u00f9 ricca<\/u>
sarei dovuto<\/u> essere pi\u00f9 ricco<\/u> <\/p>\n

saremmo dovuti<\/u> essere pi\u00f9 ricchi<\/u><\/strong><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

I would be interested to hear from Ureder (who posted this question) whether the conditional is more, or less complicated in Spanish. It’s hard to imagine that it could be more difficult than the Italian!<\/p>\n
