Now, out of the six of us who went to the restaurant, only one didn\u2019t have any specific dietary requirement: <strong>mia madre<\/strong>! Here\u2019s a brief account in Italian of the rather complicated process of ordering our meals. I tortelli ai funghi hanno carne?\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Me: \u201cMy husband and I are vegetarian. Do the tortelli with mushroom have meat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Cameriere: \u201cNo, li facciamo noi, e hanno un ripieno di spinaci, ricotta ed erbette. Sono molto buoni, ve li consiglio\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Waieter: \u201cNo, we make them ourselves, and they are filled with spinach, ricotta cheese and wild herbs. They are very nice, I recommend them\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Io: \u201cVa bene, due tortelli ai funghi per favore\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Me: \u201cOK, two tortelli with mushrooms please\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Mio padre: \u201cIo vorrei la pasta al rag\u00f9, ma non posso mangiare uova. Avete della pasta senza uovo?\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>My father: \u201cI\u2019d like pasta with ragout, but I can\u2019t eat eggs. Do you have pasta without eggs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Cameriere: \u201cCertamente. Invece delle tagliatelle possiamo farle degli spaghetti o delle penne al rag\u00f9, cosa preferisce?\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Waiter: \u201cCertainly. Mi dica lei\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Waiter: \u201cIf you prefer we also have pasta for celiacs. You tell me (take your pick)\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Fiorino: \u201cAllora prendo la pasta al rag\u00f9\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Fiorino: \u201cIn that case I\u2019ll have pasta with ragout\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Zio Luciano: \u201cIo e la signora prendiamo risotto ai funghi\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Uncle Luciano: \u201cMe and this lady will have risotto with mushrooms\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Cameriere: \u201cAllora, ricapitoliamo: due tortelli ai funghi, una penna al rag\u00f9, una pasta senza glutine al rag\u00f9, due risotti ai funghi. Va bene?\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Waiter: \u201cOK, let\u2019s recap: two tortelli with mushrooms, one penne with ragout, one pasta without gluten with ragout, two risotto with mushrooms. Would you like to order dessert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Mio padre: \u201cCosa avete senza uova?\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>My father: \u201cWhat do you have without eggs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Cameriere: \u201cUn momento che vado a chiedere in cucina\u201d \u2026 \u201cAllora, l\u2019unico dolce senza uova \u00e8 la panna cotta, che facciamo noi\u201d<\/strong>     <br \/>Waiter: \u201cJust a moment whilst I\u2019ll go and ask in the kitchen\u201d \u2026 \u201cWell, the only dessert without eggs is panna cotta (lit. cooked cream), which we make ourselves\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Mio padre: \u201cVa bene la panna cotta\u201d<\/strong>     <br \/>My father: \u201cPanna cotta is fine\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Io: \u201cLa panna cotta \u00e8 fatta con gelatina animale, vero?\u201d<\/strong>     <br \/>Me: \u201cPanna cotta is made with animal gelatine, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Cameriere: \u201cS\u00ec, non \u00e8 vegetariana\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Waiter: \u201cYes, it\u2019s not vegetarian\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Io: \u201cIn questo caso prendo un sorbetto al limone, e uno anche per mia madre\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Me: \u201cIn that case I\u2019ll have a lemon sorbet, and one for my mother as well\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Geoff: \u201cIo prendo il mio dolce preferito, la torta di pere e cioccolato\u201d<\/strong>     <br \/>Geoff: \u201cI\u2019ll have my favourite dessert, pear and chocolate cake\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Zio Luciano: \u201cEssendo diabetico, purtroppo non posso mangiare i dolci \u2026 avete della frutta fresca?\u201d<\/strong>     <br \/>Uncle Luciano: \u201cAs I\u2019m diabetic, unfortunately I can\u2019t eat sweets \u2026 do you have fresh fruit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Cameriere: \u201cAbbiamo dell\u2019ottimo ananas fresco\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Waiter: \u201cWe have some excellent fresh pineapple\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Zio Luciano: \u201cD\u2019accordo\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Uncle Luciano: \u201cThat\u2019s fine\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Fiorino: \u201cAnch\u2019io prendo l\u2019ananas\u201d      <br \/><\/strong>Fiorino: \u201cI\u2019ll have pineapple as well\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">&#160;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font color=\"#646b86\">If you have special dietary requirements, eating out in Italy isn\u2019t usually too difficult, especially as meals are served as a series of piatti, rather than one dish with everything on it (as in traditional English cooking for example), so it\u2019s usually quiet easy to pick and choose. If you don\u2019t drink caffeine you could always ask for <strong>un caff\u00e8 decaffeinato<\/strong>, or simply <strong>un caff\u00e8 deca<\/strong>.
