Gioved\u00ec scorso era il mio compleanno e senz\u2019altro \u00e8 stato un compleanno diverso dagli altri. Per cominciare ci siamo alzati la mattina alle sei, per andare in un posto nuovo ed \u2018esotico\u2019: l\u2019ospedale di Massa! Ebbene s\u00ec, Geoff non \u00e8 un marito come tutti, che porta la moglie in gita in una citt\u00e0 romantica come Venezia o Vienna. Lui \u00e8 molto pi\u00f9 inventivo: mi ha portato ad una visita allergologica! D\u2019accordo, non \u00e8 stata colpa sua, non c\u2019erano altre date disponibili fino a settembre. Siamo arrivati all\u2019ospedale alle 8:10 dopo esserci persi e aver bisticciato per la navigazione solo una volta, un vero record! L\u2019appuntamento era per le 8:30, ma alle 9:00 non avevano ancora aperto la porta dell\u2019ambulatorio, cos\u00ec Geoff si \u00e8 stufato e ha bussato, e finalmente ci hanno fatto entrare.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last Thursday was my birthday, and it was without a doubt a very different birthday. To start with we got up at 6:00 in the morning to go to a new \u2018exotic\u2019 place: the hospital in Massa! Yes, Geoff is not any ordinary husband, who takes his wife on a trip to a romantic city such as Venice or Vienna. He\u2019s much more inventive: he took me to an examination at the allergy clinic! Ok, it wasn\u2019t his fault, there wasn’t another date available until September. We arrived at the hospital at 8:10 after getting lost and only arguing once about the directions, a real record! The appointment was for 8:30, but at 9:00 the door to the surgery was still closed, so Geoff got fed up and knocked, and finally they let us in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Finita la visita medica abbiamo deciso, gi\u00e0 che c\u2019eravamo, di andare su al Castello, che si vedeva torreggiare maestoso sopra la citt\u00e0 di Massa. Dopo un paio di tentativi a vuoto (non ci sono indicazioni stradali, ovviamente) siamo riusciti ad arrivarci, ma abbiamo deciso di rimandare la visita dell\u2019interno del castello per il prossimo appuntamento medico (s\u00ec, ce ne saranno altri!).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Once the examination was over, we decided, as we were there, to go up to the Castle, which could be seen towering majestically above the town of Massa. After a couple of failed attempts (there are no road signs, of course) we managed to get there, but we decided to postpone visiting the inside of the castle until the next medical appointment (yes, there will be more of them!).<\/p>\n

Nel tornare a casa ci siamo fermati all\u2019ospedale di Pontremoli per fare un altro test clinico, questa volta per me: \u201cSegno dell\u2019et\u00e0 che avanza, quando si spende il giorno del proprio compleanno a fare visite mediche\u201d ha commentato l\u2019infermiera quando ha notato la mia data di nascita!<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the way back home we stopped by the hospital in Pontremoli for another clinical test, this time for myself: \u201cIt\u2019s a sign of advancing age, when you spend your birthday at medical appointments\u201d commented the nurse when she noticed my date of birth!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Tornati a casa abbiamo pranzato velocemente e poi ho preparato un vero \u2018fruit cake\u2019 inglese seguendo la ricetta speciale di mia suocera. Dopo aver schiacciato un piccolo pisolino*<\/span>, sono andata a trovare i miei gi\u00f9 a Pontremoli, dove mi aspettava un bellissimo mazzo di rose rosse, dono del mio caro zio Luciano. Alle 16:10 avevo appuntamento in Piazza Italia con le mie amiche di Yoga, per andare tutte insieme a casa di Olga.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Back home we had a quick lunch, and then I made a real English fruit cake using my mother in law\u2019s special recipe. After having a little nap, I went to visit my parents down in Pontremoli, where a beautiful bunch of red roses was awaiting for me, a present from my dear uncle Luciano. At 4:10 pm I met my Yoga friends in Piazza Italia, in order to go to Olga\u2019s house together.<\/p>\n

Olga ha una bella casa in campagna subito fuori Pontremoli e, cosa molto rara qui nella montagnosa Lunigiana, ha un po\u2019 di prato inglese pianeggiante. Dato che il mio compleanno cadeva di gioved\u00ec, giorno in cui insegno Yoga, le avevo chiesto se potevo celebrare facendo la lezione sul suo prato, invece che nella tetra stanza che puzza di sigarette, dove normalmente teniamo la lezione. E cos\u00ec abbiamo fatto una meravigliosa lezione all\u2019aria aperta in compagnia di una bella gattina, che ha gironzolato tutt\u2019intorno sfregandosi contro le gambe di tutte noi. Durante la lezione eravamo cullate dal cinguettio degli uccelli, il frinire delle cicale e il ronzio delle motoseghe.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Olga has a beautiful country house just outside Pontremoli, with a small flat lawn, something very rare here in mountainous Lunigiana. Since my birthday was on a Thursday, the day that I teach my Yoga class, I\u2019d asked her if I could celebrate by doing the lesson out on her lawn instead of in the dingy room that smells of stale cigarettes where we normally hold the class. So we had a wonderful lesson out in the open air in the company of a beautiful cat, who wandered around brushing against everybody\u2019s legs. During the lesson we were lulled by the chirping of the birds, the singing of the cicadas, and the buzz of chainsaws.<\/p>\n

Finita la lezione, abbiamo festeggiato con un \u2018piccolo\u2019 rinfresco, che comprendeva una squisita sbrisolona con ricotta. \u201cChe cavolo \u00e8 una sbrisolona?\u201d mi pare di sentirvi dire. Il mistero sar\u00e0 svelato nel mio prossimo post!<\/strong><\/p>\n

After the lesson, we celebrated with a \u2018little\u2019 refreshment, which included a delicious sbrisolona <\/strong>with ricotta cheese. \u201cWhat on earth is a sbrisolona<\/strong>?\u201d I hear you ask. All will be revealed in my next post!<\/p>\n
